All they really did was meet the mobsters at the airport, then beat them to pulp (or threatened to as they had already beat-up the ones who came before them, but they kept coming to buy the LAPD) and told them to be on the next plane out of town. No machine guns a blazing. That was the LAPD before the reforms and William Parker when the LAPD WAS the "mob" of LA, or more accurately, the Mayor and other politicians were the crime lords and the LAPD the enforcers. Can't we get ONE movie to get the history right. As good a movie as LA Confidential was, it was also quite inaccurate in many instances.

Wasn't that what Changeling was about?

For the real story just read LA Noir instead. Basically is the story of William Parker and Mickey Cohen. Speaking of LA Noir, one of the best ways to see a visual approximation of mid-to-early century Los Angeles is the LA Noir videogame.

That being said I am absolutely going to go see this movie.

No. The Changeling was about how society treats women, especially those who are single mums without a man and dare to challenge other men.

The main flaw in the time line of many of the fictionalized books (sometimes masquerading as non-fiction) and movies is William Parker became Chief in 1950 and that was the END of rampant large scale corruption in and out of the LAPD and the criminal characters like Micky Cohen were headed to prison by 1950 and/or NOT what they were before 1950. The mob set up shop in Vegas for the gambling, and LA law enforcement was just too hostile for them to ever set-up large scale empires like they did in east coast or mid west cities.

Now, small scale shenanigans at LAPD along with racism (mostly towards African-Americans and Hispanics in the ghetto or barrio) and brutality to those who have no voice after 1950 is another matter. Also, we must remember that LASD was nearly a twin of LAPD faults as LASD had it own "lumps for lip" policy and their own antagonism toward African-Americans and Hispanics in its patrol area.

I love seeing big cities on film. The French Connection is my favorite. NYC in the 70's was so fascinating, it was just a big city with big city problems. No homerism/boosterism, it wasn't beloved by everyone. It was flawed, raw and unforgiving.

I too love to see Los Angeles or, should I say Los Anngliss from the 40's & 50's. LA movies are some of my favorites because LA has changed so much an it's interesting to see it through it's stages.

Finally, I love the game LA Noire. Sometimes I don't even play the missions, I'll just cruise downtown and crash into stuff lol

I haven't seen Gangster Squad, but I saw Chinatown a couple years ago, dope depiction of old school LA.
