Hello all,
I will be moving to LA in the Spring of 2013 and wanted to get your advice on where to live. Im a 26 year old guy who will be working in Duarte. I'd leave at 630AM-7AM in the morning and come back at around 630-7PM. I wanted to live in a nice area, preferably the beach, or a place with good culture, a lot of things to do (outdoor, bars etc) but am afraid that the commute would be too crazy. Am I nuts to be considering Santa Monica/Pacific Palisades/Venice? Where would you all live? I would be OK with a 45 minute one way commute. Much love!

What's your budget?

I'd say the beach is probably a bit too far if you're hoping for a 45 minute commute. It's about 45 minutes without traffic. Leaving at 6:30-7am you wouldn't be in the worst of rush hour, but it would definitely be starting.

Pasadena might work better for you. Plenty of things to do. Great restaurants and nightlife. You're also close to the San Gabriel mountains and a little closer to the ocean than Duarte.

The beach really wouldn't be doable. Studio City is a 35 minute drive to Duarte at 7am. That'd be a good choice. If you want something hipper, Silverlake and Los Feliz would be a good bet.

Pasadena definitely doesn't fit the "good culture" bill.

You working at City of Hope?

The novelty would wear off, the commute is too brutal, you need to live in Arcadia or thereabouts. If you want to be near the beach, you need to find a job in that area.

I agree that you would have a horrible commute from Santa Monica, Venice or the Palisades. If you're looking for good restaurants and nightlife, Pasadena would be an easy commute, or for that matter anything as far west as Studio City, would not be horrible. I agree that if you want something hipper look at Silverlake or the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood.

Thanks yall! Yep, I'll be at the Hope. My budget is around 1200-1500 for a studio. How does Los Felix, NoHo, Silverlake and Pasadena compare with regards to friendly people, restaurants, bars, outdoorsy activity? I get the feeling that Pasadena is homogenous and ritzy, but I may be mistaken. How bad is the drive from Los Feliz/SL to Duarte?

Pasadena would be the best bet. Great nightlife in Old Town and diverse neighborhoods.

Pasadena would keep your commute reasonable enough that you'll actually have time for the activities you enjoy. The other places you're thinking about won't.

No, Pasadena is not homogenous, and I don't think it's ritzy. You could try Duarte itself. It's definitely not ritzy.

Avoid commuting to the beach at all costs, you will not regret staying close.

I have meetings once or twice a quarter at the GE Aviation complex off the 210 -- I used to live in Santa Monica, and the morning commute was not fun. Arcadia, Pass, etc, are all good suggestions.

Whoever said Pasadena doesn't have good culture .... I'm a bit confused by that, what do you define as culture?

I would choose Pasedena.

From there, you would be going against the heavy flow of traffic along the 210.
