I've taken a new job in El Segundo. The rents over there are out of my price range, not to mention Manhattan Beach. That leaves me with Hawthorne if I want a commute within ten minutes. I see lots of decent studios under $900. I'm focused on one for rent at 134th and Prairie. It's recently remodeled, gated underground parking, gated courtyard building. I've looked at a couple others in the 130's within a block west of Prairie.

Any info anyone can provide is really appreciated! thanks.

Hawthorne isn't the best place to live but i wouldn't call it the worst. That area over there is kinda of sketchy. Most apartments in Hawthorne are sketchy. Basically you'll have to check the neighborhood out. I would try the west side of Inglewood if i were you. Anything West of Prairie in Inglewood will be fine. you might wanna check out Torrance too which is much better.

Thanks. That helps. I'm looking at two apartments in Hawthorne, west of Inglewood tomorrow: Monte Carlo Apts. and Pacific Garden Apts. and one between Inglewood and Hawthorne on Imperial Hwy.

I'm sorta thinking gated parking is a must even though I drive a 2007 Yaris. I only have it insured for liability so I'm stuck with the bill if someone destroys my dashboard for my cd/radio.

I lived in SE DC surrounded by projects during the crack epidemic, and Hawthorne looks tame compared to that!

I went there once and it was the worst. The only good thing about the city is that it bears close proximity to the airport and ocean, therefore allowing cooler weather compared to SGV. There are no authentic joints, the area looked old, and most people seemed to be non-Asian or non-white, which was different from what I was used to.

Elle Oh Elle, what do you mean when you say “There are no authentic joints” . . . compared to what, I might ask? Just what defines an authentic joint in your book?

Based on your reply, it sounds like you prefer and feel most at home in SGV, and prefer not to be around and associate with non-Asian or non-whites. WOW! With remarks like that, for sure Hawthorne must have been a scary place for you while you were there . . . I hope that you locked your car doors, rolled-up your windows, and that you did not look at anyone while you were there as you made a quick getaway back to your pristine and proper SGV! How must you feel about other parts of Los Angeles and adjoining cities, where the main population is non-Asian and non-white? I’m not stupid, I could read in between the lines of your racist post!

It’s racist comments like this and people like you that make this world a very bad place! I wish you much health and happiness in your Utopia (SGV) . . . God help the non-Asian and non-white people that have to live with people like you on a day-to-day basis.

There are a lot of great apartments in El Segundo also.

There are also fairly nice little neighborhoods sprinkled throughout Hawthorne. And lots of apartment buildings tucked into predominatly SFR neighborhoods. Particularly west of Hawthorne Blvd and South of 120th.

Wow, someone took my response a bit too personally. Trust me man, I've been through SC and I was never as uncomfortable as I was there than back in Hawthorne. Like SGV? Me and my friend in Vegas had this same debate, what's ironic is that her best friend lives in MP which has lots of authentic Chinese food.

Fight all you want, it's a well-known fact that many other cities don't have the same level of food or people. It doesn't bother some, I do have cousins that have lived in rural Illinois or whatever, but since SGV is located not too far from Hawthorne anyway, I wouldn't live in Hawthorne over SGV. Yeah, if you were a transplant who found a job in Hawthorne, well, by all means, take it and live there.

I grew up in Hawthorne and I gotta say I moved 6 years ago to the Orange County area because Hawthorne was getting bad. I've lived on Rosecrans, Cordary, Doty, 139th Street, and Avis Ave. I'm not sure how much they cleaned it up but I wouldn't suggest moving anywhere East of Prairie. All the apts between Prairie and Crenshaw, Rosecrans and El Segundo has a bunch of thugs, drunks, and drug addicts. I still know people that live in that area and I have no desire to move back. I do know that west of Prairie is a little better where there are a lot of houses. Some of those houses have a studio or 1 bedroom behind them. You may even want to look off of Hawthorne Blvd going towards Lawndale. I lived on 66th and Hawthorne Blvd and that area was pretty chill and closer to Torrance and The South Bay Mall. It still would be a quick drive to El Segundo.
