Very true, not true, true.

40% gay male. I estimated 50% because I'm including lesbians.

Nobody in their right mind goes to the Sunset Strip. It's a dead zone unless you wanna go to divey cheesy bars like Red Rock. Santa Monica has much more upscale nightlife. Most heterosexual nightlife is in Hollywood now along Hollywood Blvd... This is, unless, you want a dive bar, which in case the Sunset Strip or even culver city would suffice.

The LA Weekly article I posted says 40% gay, period. I assume they included men and women. That said, they didn't really provide a source and may have just pulled a number out of thin air. It's not like the Census asks this question so 40% or 50% sounds about right.

I've not hung out on the Sunset Strip in a long time. But I think your carte blanche dismissal of it is far too harsh in my view. The Strip has deep history with key venues like the Comedy Club and The Whisky and Roxy. The heyday may have come and gone a long time ago but there still remains plenty of viable entertainment options. More variety than exists in Santa Monica I might add.

I'd agree that central Hollywood has taken center state in the nightlclub/bar scene. But to depict the Sunset Strip as chalk full of dive bars is way off the mark. There are plenty of upscale places along the strip.

As far as I can see the only correct fact in the above post is:

1. Santa Monica is closer to the ocean than West Hollywood.

Are there any dives left on the Strip? I don't think so.

I think it feels way more than 40% when you are actually there though, probably because WeHo is also a big gay tourist destination.

The Whiskey, Roxy, Rainbow Room etc were all great in their heyday (or so I hear) but are practically dead and worthless now. Teenage kids get their daddies to rent out the Whiskey and Roxy to play, for example. The crowd is heavily nonlocal.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of cheap, lively places to drink on the Strip. Red Rock, Isla Cantina, The Den, Saddleranch, Rock N Roll Reillys, Cabo cantina - to name a few. But these are all inexpensive, loud, crowded bars , not exclusive nightclubs and lounges. All of the above bars can be replicated on Santa Monica's main st, 3rd st promenade easily If you want that, you have to go to Hollywood Blvd. That's all. Sunset Strip is crowded enough (though nothing like it was in the 90s and before, and nothing like Hollywood is now) but it's not the scene it used to be.

Point is - Sunset Strip has nothing special. Santa Monica has everything it has. Hollywood has stuff SAnta Monica doesn't have. So does Gay West Hollywood (if you're gay).

I would recommend Santa Monica (I'm biased because I live here), but I prefer to be closer to the ocean. I like the cooler weather in Santa Monica.
