Ok, so if the boat is offshore, meaning it is in the water, away from land, then winds that are over that same ocean headed toward land , must also be considered offshore.
How can these winds over the ocean be called onshore, when they originate offshore perhaps where that boat is anchored two miles from the shore.
How is it the boat is considered offshore, but the winds in the same area are not?
Bob.

It's weather jargon that started in the Meteorological community. It is what it is.

Who are you, George Carlin?

If the winds blowing onshore did not come from offshore, then where would they be blowing?

Shall we delve into the mysteries that are crosswinds? Tradewinds? Earth, Wind, and Fire?

I'm not a meteorologist but I think they get confused, go in circles, and turn into tornadoes. That's why we should be clear about our use of onshore and offshore.
