Hi All,

My husband is thinking of taking a position in east LA. We would like to find a safe neighboring town that is no longer than a 45 minutes commute with a budget of around 900,000. Schools are very important as well.

Thanks in advance.

Cerritos wouldn't be that bad, and the schools are among the better/best in LA county(better if your child tests in to Whitney)

Is La Canada doable on that budget?

i can't believe no one mentioned south pasadena. it's very close to east LA and has well-regarded schools; beautiful, well-maintained homes with nice architecture; a charming, walkable downtown with a popular farmer's market; and easy access to the culture and amenities of neighboring pasadena. it also has rail access to downtown and parts of east LA in one direction and pasadena in the other. really, it's one of the most well-rounded towns in LA county.

i could be wrong, but i think $900K should be enough to purchase a decent home in south pasadena. and even if that budget will only buy you a starter home, you'll still be able to take advantage of the many great things about the town.

Top schools, homes less than $900K, 45 minute or less rush hour commute to East LA:

Temple City
Arcadia
La Canada
La Crescenta
South Pasadena
Cerritos * - Other nearby towns are actually very nice but might be more than a 45 minute commute...Rossmoor, La Palma, Los Alamitos

With all of the above, but merely good, not top schools:

Alhambra
Glendale
Burbank
