We can blame a large part of it on the ludicrous pension and benefit plans government employees get. Especially law enforcement. Work a couple decades and you're still pulling in a six figure pension for the rest of your life at taxpayer expense. Sick.

Hell, they can't seem to count votes all that well. I don't think anyone's losing sleep by not getting the unemployment stats correct.

Yes they are, there are alternate measures of unemployment that include "underemployed", etc that are published with the numbers you hear in the news (e.g., U-3).

I guess when you're anti-government you don't even need to bother to actually see what the government is doing.

This has little to do with the state's unemployment problem. Also, most police officers aren't even making $100k and their pensions are based on their salaries, only those working 30+ years get a pension that is even close to their salary. But again, another thing you don't actually need to look-up.

California will bounce back for a few reasons. California will always have the natural appeal due to the weather, topography, and the entertainment industry. It might take a little while, but as the country's largest economy, it will come back.

I'll just add to what has been said. Another reason for the high unemployment statistics here in CA is because the state politicians made too many mistakes and so CA has a serious deficit problem.

Whatever, the unemployment rate IS higher than official numbers, talk to anyone.

It's not just police officers it's every government employee, overpaid, underworked, reaping enormous benefits and pensions, AND FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

This strains the state budget and deficit, which creates higher taxes/fees, which hurts business, which hurts employment.

What doesn't get counted are all the self employed people who were making bank in anything real estate related and are now lucky to still be afloat at all. They're not considered unemployed but they're sure not spending money in the economy like they were during the boom.
