Apologies if there's a thread on this already -- I only saw older ones and would like some more recent advice (although the older threads were very helpful):

We're looking at a house that is where Eagle Rock, Mt. Washington, and Highland Park all meet (not sure which neighborhood it actually falls in) -- in the blocks surrounded by York, Ave. 50, El Paso, and Eagle Rock Blvd. Does anyone have any insight about the safety of that neighborhood? I've driven around there a lot and feel like it's okay, but I know day-to-day life is different than passing through. Also, I know it's generally better to be north of York, better to be a little higher in the hills of Mt. Washington, and as far as I can tell most of the shadiness of HLP is over by Figueroa where the avenues cross over, but I don't know much about the specific area where this house we're looking at is.

Relevant info: we have a 3 month old son so safety and quality of life for a young family are important. I used to live in Silver Lake and go into Echo Park a lot; I know those neighborhoods better so know where not to go but don't really know this potential new neighborhood as well.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I live in HP off of York and Avenue 52 so am farily close to the area you describe. I've (I'm one of the whitest white people you'll ever see!) experienced zero problems in the 12 years I have lived in HP other than the occasional local idiot that mimics my wife's accent (she is Chinese). I believe part of the reason for the quite life is the street we live on; it's a short narrow, dead end street that looks more like an alley so there isn't much "stray" traffic through there. Grocery shopping is great and the vibe on York is getting a little more bohemian as time goes on. I don't know about the schools but in general I believe it is a surpisingly ok area to live in. I always chuckle when some of the young Hispanics here at work find out I live in HP (one young lady lives in HP) and don't believe me at first. I will say I do not walk around after dark though as to be candid there is a lot of gang activity in the area but seems like if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Just use your street sense and I think you will enjoy yourself. Hope this helps you.
