So, I am looking at a home in Pomona near Central Park and Mission Blvd. (South of Holt). Scary? We are looking in Pomona because there are decent sized, remodeled homes within our price range. After viewing some older posts about the Pomona area, I am beginning to worry that it is horrible to live there. Is this true? If it is, where else may you find a home, not over 230,000, that is safe, not dilapidated, with a yard? I am on the other side of the country so I could really use a person's educated advice. Something other than just stats!

yes scary in my estimation. Now, may I ask, if you are on the other side of the country shouldn't you first come to the area before you get too serious about where to buy? Where will you be working, why do you want to live in the SGV? Do you have a family? There are many things to consider and I think posters need a little more info before anyone can give you an educated guess on where you should live.

To elaborate a bit more ... with the exception of the Phillips Ranch area and some small areas by Lincoln Park and the Fairplex, the rest of Pomona is working class. That doesn't mean it's all bad, but depending on your background and whether you speak Spanish or not, you may feel uncomfortable. Though the city has cleaned up a lot in the past 20 years, some areas you still don't want to be alone out at night.

Here are some more numbers to think about ...

Generally speaking for any neighborhood, follow the schools. In areas with good performing public schools, the neighborhood follows, and vice versa.

Pomona is craptacular. Crime is fairly common although the violent crime is not as bad as it was say 10 years ago.

And there are not any homes in the $230K range that are safe and not dilapidated until you get further out in the Inland Empire, or up to the desert. Your price range right now is not even close. I can only think of a couple neighborhoods in LA and OC that even fit your requirements in the $350-400K range.
