I'm moving to LA and strongly considering living in Downtown LA.

I'm going to be working downtown, so I like the idea of no commute.

Here are some questions...I'd appreciate some feedback:

>What are the best areas to live? I checked out Little Tokyo/Toy District and it looked pretty nasty and unsafe. I'm not a wus and I've lived in NYC, but I don't want to have to be scared to walk around and have trash all over the place. O.K..I'm moving from San Diego and I've become a little soft...

>Are there cool neighborhoods that have coffee shops, gyms and some decent restaurants...a little buzz in the early evening and on the weekends?

>I heard Ralph's opened Downtown...is it true?

>My budget to rent a one bedroom/loft is up to $2,500....can I find a sweet pad for that budget?

Thanks in advance for the help!

With your criteria, you may not like downtown. Check out Echo Park and Silverlake. Both are a skip from downtown and have the buzz you seek and you don't have to step over drunks, needles and used rubbers.

man used rubbers are such a ****en problem down town... The depressing part is that when you kick them off your shoes is that they don't look like they were used.

Hmm,...

Downtown is still a work in progress. It has about 5 years to go. Ralphs is completely built, but a regional strike has kept it closed. Once the strike is over, Ralphs will be open for business. There are other grocers in the area and alot of convenience stores. Also, you can do online grocery shopping and have them deliver it. Once you start it and get used to it, you will probably still do your shopping online even when Ralphs opens.

If you want the cleanest part of downtown, live in the market lofts. The best way to find out where to live downtown is to go and walk around. The historic core at 4th and main, and south park area around staples center are the best areas. If you go to 4th and main, try and tend more north west on your travels because going south on main is bad, going east of main is usually bad. North of 4th and main is "okay" west of 4th and main is decent. Go to a downtown arts walk, and ask people in person. If you cant, check out blogdowntown and email someone to ask.

I don't know if you noticed the ad about downtown lofts on City Data. These ads are often placed in between posts. Here's the link:
