City of Airheads: Villaraigosa Dismantles L.A.'s Vaunted Library System - Page 1 - News - Los Angeles - LA Weekly
Boston,New Yorl,Chicago and Detroit have fought to keep their Libraries open. Not Villaraigosa!!!!

The poor and underprivledged youth in the City will suffer the most from Library cutbacks , while smug and clueless Tony V. has a higher priority.
You guessed it "Media W***e". The libraries of the City are often the only safe spots for children to avoid the Cities gangs as Gangbangers generally avoid libraries where kids and families can access literature and help educate themselves withh, reading, studyin and using library computers.

Instead the Mayor is constantly looking for his next photo op while ignoring the needs of LA's citizentry.

What's as sad, according to that article, is that 10 out of the 13 city councilmen also voted to approve Villaraigosa's cut back of library hours. The priorities seem to be ass backwards especially when students can't access libraries on Sundays and Mondays.

Those politicians are failing their constituents as the most poor among us and their children(LA's future) will suffer the most. Thewealthy always have cable TV's and computers at home and this put the most disadvantaged and a greater disadvantage.

The Libraries are for all people to use and enjoy regardless of demographics.

LA's downtown library remains my all-time favorite city library; I LOVE that library. I also have spent a lot of time (including on Sundays) at branch libraries. I know these are rough economic times, but I do agree that keeping the libraries open should be a priority, especially since for many economically struggling people they provide their only access to the internet. And since finding a job is so computer-based these days, that definitely seems like a problem. I used to go to the Hollywood Library frequently on Sundays; there was always a crowd of people waiting to rush in the moment the doors opened. I'll have to read the library more carefully later, but given how wonderful LA's libraries are (and they are; I think it's a great system), I hope that they can soon return to more hours.

According to the article that the OP linked, other cities had to face similar cuts and the mayor of New York was over-ruled by that city council to keep the libraries open. I think Angelenos should write their city council person to complain. I live in Pasadena and the Central library downtown is closed on Sundays to the general population except children and teens who are the only one's who can use it on Sunday's.
