Hi all:

In May, I plan to move from Georgia to Los Angeles after I finish grad school. I just have a few questions about handicap accessibility. I use a power wheelchair to get around, so an accessible apartment and transportation since I will not have a car will be important. I'm currently search for jobs and looking for info on places to live. I'd be open to living anywhere as long as it's a safe with good transit and proximity to shopping, restaurants, etc.

I'd appreciate any info on handicap accessibility or good areas to live. Budget for rent is between $1500-$1900 a month.

I can't comment on wheelchair accessibility of apartments (I assume newer is more friendly). But, sidewalk cutouts at intersections is becoming more and more common (definitely in Pasadena)

Here is a guide to accessibility of the Los Angeles bus and rail system:

Don't know how good this site is since it only came up on a google search:

Los Angeles Tourist Accessibility Guide - Accessible Transportation

And just to show that it's not all peaches and cream, this is an ABC news investigation on the MTA's deficiencies:

I think that your housing budget will allow you to live in a 1-bedroom studio or apartment in most desirable areas. Conventional wisdom for L.A. is to locate the job first and then look for nearby housing. Best of luck.
