Hi, I just recently moved to Los Angeles from NY. I was very used to the tradition every Fall of driving a couple hours north to farms where you could get fresh pies, fresh cider, fresh donuts, etc. Pick your own Pumpkins around Halloween, hang out with some goats, make a day of it. Maybe even find some Barn Sales on the way.

There has to be farms like this within a two hour radius of LA! I've been having trouble finding anything that isn't off the side of the freeway or in a concrete parking lot with some hay thrown about.

So far I've only found Snow-Line Orchard in Yucaipa, which looks very promising! (Snow-Line Orchard) But I'd like to visit a bunch.

Please point me in the right direction! I'd love nothing more to carry on my traditions here on the west.

Thanks!

Turn your attention towards Oak Glen in San Bernardino County. I've done some research on this and that seems to be the place to go. Here's my old thread on this:

I definitely second a trip to Oak Glen (much better than Julian). Don't miss out on the events at Riley's Farm, and also the u-pick. The locale is situated right at the snowline so it preserves the acids & crunch in apples. They're even better than those you find at farmer's markets. I particularly like the Stayman winesaps from Los Rios Rancho which have a haunting zing & spiciness that lingers. And it's close enough to the Cabazon outlet & Morongo Casino so you can even make it a full day with something for everyone.

I'm very excited to see this post! I asked a similar question in the San Berdoo forum but only got one response.

So do you all think it's better to go in September, then? I was planning on going in October. (Have never been there yet.)

Is there a certain time of day that's better? Are weekdays better than the weekends?

Would LOVE to hear from some more peeps on this!

Oak glen is not far from here & its well worth the visit especially duing the fall & the christmas season. The elevation is around 5000 feet. The apples are really good but like any mountain community its not cheap.

I used to go to oak glen often & visit the petting zoo, museum, shops, etc but i havent in awhile though.

How not-cheap is it?

Several years ago I saw a Huell Howser episode on apple country in Southern California. I have been wanting to go since I saw the show but haven't made it yet. See below for details from California Gold's website:

Road Trip With Huell Howser #135 - OAK GLEN

It's apple season and Huell is off to Oak Glen, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, to take part in a popular fall tradition.

This is great! I'm from Boston and I ALSO had a tradition of picking apples/pumpkins, cider donuts, etc... When I moved to LA, I figured that was just one of the things I could forget about. Very excited to learn otherwise!

You can pick your own juicy apples at various farms for a fee. I dont know how much but if i had a family i sure would do it.

Try the fresh apple pie in oak glen. I have always liked oak glen & its a nice ride up the mountain from yucaipa & down the other side to cherry valley & beaumont.

If my car wasnt such a damn gas pig i would take me a lil trip. Oh well...
