I was getting insurance quotes for a few different locations I'm looking at and in La it was only $180 for 6 months! In NY I pay about $3000 a year! I did some research and read something about if you don't make alot insurance is cheap but the quote didn't ask anything about income. Will I be close to paying what I'm paying in NY since I probably wont be eligible with my income or is it just that cheap?

what kind of coverage are you looking for? if you are a good driver, don't drive a fancy car, and live in a less populated area (ie riverside county) then you might be able to get the state minimum insurance that cheap. my wife and i pay about $1k per year on our car with full coverage and two good drivers on our policy.

As Brism stated, it depends on what you are covering. I have a Porsche and a Hyundai and both have differant coverage on them. Factors that insurance companies will look at is how long you have driven without any accidents, traffic violations meaning tickets, what city do you live in, the weather conditions for that city, how far is your commute, and the kind of car you will be driving. If you drive a Ferrari you will pay a lot more than someone that drives a Ford. If you drive a Ford Expedition you will pay a lot more than someone who drives a Ford Focus. The Insurance companies do profile people with the kind of cars that they drive. (And we are't supposed to profile anyone LOL.)

Places like Fresno up north may even have a higher cost of insurance. At one time they held the record for the most stolen cars in the nation. Just depends what the Insurance companies think the risk is. Maybe in NY the risk is greater that your car will get in an accident. Maybe in the winter time you can't help it. Our winters aren't that bad and as a result the loss in an accident to inclimate weather is lower than in New York.

$180 for 6 months sounds low. Are you sure the quote wasnt $180/month (more realistic).

What company?

Vehicle Insurance in CA is based on vehicle, location and driver error. Income is not a factor.

Could the $180/6 months be for state minimum liability coverage with no coverage for your own car?

Lots of people in California are insured by Reebok. They buy the car for cash, don't bother transferring the title or registering it, forget the formality of a legitimate insurance company and probably no driver's license either. Then if they're in a traffic accident, "Feets, do your thing!"

I'm paying less than $450 per year for $100K/$300K PL $50K PD and I don't consider that bad at all considering those fairly enhanced coverages. (I have UM and comp too, but not included in that figure.) I get the safe driver discount, multi-line discount and professional (engineer) discount so the cost would be more without them.

I wish we had a law and a policy in place that any driver found in a CHP/police traffic stop to not have insurance should have their towed and impounded until they furnish proof of insurance. Furthermore insurance companies should be required to notify DMV when the insurance becomes void, the car then to be flagged when law enforcement accesses the license or VIN.
