Gol darn it, I have the RIGHT to granite counters, backyard kitchen, rain shower head, big screen TV, vacation to Europe with whole family in tow, new car every year (leased of course), recessed lighting, etc, etc, etc. I can't imagine how anyone could survive otherwise! / sarc

Yeah, I can't feel sorry for anyone who feels it a necessity to plow over $100,000 into a kitchen remodel. She's "lucky" her and her ex-husband bought the house in 1997....which will allow them to "get out" and still have some equity.

Its amazing how people see $200/mo for a maid as a necessity even when they're unemployed or underemployed. Clean your own damn house.

What the heck kind of kitchen remodel costs $100K?!?!?!??!

Resurfaced cabinets, tile, countertops, sink....heck, even with new fridge/stove/dishwasher...on a LARGE kitchen should not cost anywhere near $100K.

Top of the line everything and lots and lots of labor charges. Contractors were making out like bandits before the crash. Spend, spend spend! Home equity is like free money!

$100K is what some people spend on kitchens, even if they never actually use them. We have been programmed to think of "kitchen" as being a symbol of our life and success. It's so weird since it's really just a workspace. I did mine simply when we remodeled, but it looks nice and is very functional and practical. Everyone likes it and there isn't any granite or stainless in sight. We rebuilt half our house, including the new kitchen, and an addition, for less than $80k several years back and it was money well spent. But while we were researching everything I remember reading a story about a local young coulpe (no kids, 2 dogs), in a gated community, who were having giant tree trunks imported over from Italy to adorne the entry way of their new custom home. That was before the market collapse and housing bust but I still got a sick feeling in my stomach that ordinary people who just happened to have some extraordinary luck (dot.com money) would choose to spend their wealth that way. I wonder where they are now?
