My boyfriend and I just moved into a new home in Syosset, and just received our 2010 - 2011 tax assessment. The assessment is around 15K less than our purchase price. From reading previous threads, I do not think that we can get our taxes grieved the assessed value is lower than our purchase price. However, we do not have any kids, and we are paying around 9K in school taxes per year. Is there any way we can make a case to get the school taxes lowered?? If so, how would we go about doing that? Thanks!

Whether or not you have kids is not going to determine how much in taxes you pay. The way you would be able to lower your taxes is if you are able to prove that your home is worth less than it was assessed for. Considering the fact your home was assessed at less than the purchase price, unless the home was purchased several years ago (which doesn't seem to be the case) the chances of you being able to do that is virtually nil.
so let me get this straight, you bought the house knowing the taxes, are technically, underassessed as you paid less than public valuation and you're complaining?
I say complain to the county exec to reform the school districts, b/c you aren't going to get anything challenging your relitively correct assessment and wasting time that way. you could move to PA, they have lower taxes...
You cannot be serious. If we all tried to get out of paying taxes for stuff we don't use, don't want to use, or will never use, this country would collapse.
Your first mistake was buying a house on Long Island expecting to get your taxes to go down. 20 years from now they will most likely have tripled.
Welcome to Long Island, my friend. School taxes an issue for you since you have no kids? Join the club. My parents raised 2 of us who never went to public school (but in fairness the district provided our textbooks and during high school our transportation) for a period of 9 years. After that? Nothing. No kids in school for the next 30 years and they are STILL paying those ever-increasong school taxes. Again, welcome to the Island. And I agree with Twingles. You are getting off cheap now. Watch and see as your taxes go up, and up, and up... Sorry to be a downer!!!!
thanks everyone! we actually purchased our home last Aug., and just recently got our assessment in Jan. that's what i pretty much figured...but worth a try! thanks for the input!

Welcome again - and if it makes you feel any better, I'm now living in Jersey (Hudson County) and they raised our taxes by a whopping 47%. No notice. Just BAM. I'm in the process of appealing my assessment value - so I feel your pain.
