Rockville Centre has a good reputation on Long Island. Don't listen to the guy that said its going "downhill". There has always been this one sketchy area of Rockville Centre near Lakeview on North Centre Avenue. This comes from an apartment complex for Low income people (the Old Mill Court apartments). There is some trouble in this area, but nothing compared to things that go on in Brownsville Brooklyn, or in the South Bronx. Most of Long Island is fine in general.
As for RVC schools, they were recently rated #2 in NY state, #1 on Long Island, and #22 in the country.
If you have kids, it is a great place to raise them. There are many large parks (The Rec. Centre, Hempstead Lake State Park, and more).
