I live 15-20 miles away from one of the largest cities in the world where we have access to culture, business, restaurants, museums, etc. I live 15-20 miles from beaches. Our school systems are top notch, though we pay our fair share. Family and friends are close. Where we live is up to you. Great thing about this country.....
I travel around the country and haven't found a place that would make me want to move. Lot's of places can become home if you're willing to take the plunge.
I'd love to, but finding a place where there are jobs in both our fields is tough. Also we both hate cities and love the country life more. Plus we have family here, etc....
And I do love NYC, but I could get by visiting a few times a year.
If she had a private sector job like I do, we'd be gone, we'd try to make new friends, and her side of the family would follow us, and then their lives would become so much easier. I've tried to convince them to move, but they don't want to be out of arms reach of their grandson, which I can't blame them for, but paying $9K a year in taxes is just crazy when your kids are out of school.
I too live in GC. And, while I agree that in real estate you get what you pay for, that doesn't mean there isn't waste, over-taxation, and political corruption here that we need to stamp out.

Now, onto the reasons I'm not leaving Long Island:
1. Profession in the city--NYC has the type of work I do.
2. Family--I have quite a bit of family nearby, and I'd prefer to keep everyone together as much as possible.
3. Italian community--It's nice to be close to Italian cultural events, food, art, music, language, etc. and to pass that on to my children.
4. Amenities in the city--The choice of food, entertainment, arts, music, culture, and international flavor of NYC is tough to match.
5. Airports--Having flights to just about any place in the world is a huge advantage. The wife is from London, so the quick Atlantic flights are key.
6. Weather--I like 4 distinct seasons a lot.
7. Schools--I put this one last because I think the difference between LI schools and other good districts in the US is pretty marginal. IMO, good schools can be had anywhere, especially if you go private with money saved on cost of living.
