Has anyone installed inground sprinklers? It looks labor intensive but not that difficult. Are there any references to see how many zone/heads I would need?

Any idea of what it would cost to install sprinklers on a 7900 sf lot?

$350 per zone is cheap. That's the low end I found when I looked in to getting a system a few years ago. $500 is probably average.
How many zones you need is determined by your water pressure and propery size. 7900 sq ft is pretty small and is probably 5-7 zones.
You can rent a machine that lays the tubing but hooking up the solenoid/water controller thingy is a complete mystery to me.
If you have a lot of trees, beware of roots that can slow your progress down.

Always wondered why those who have the inground sprinklers always have them running on rainy days like this?

If you get a rain sensor, the sprinklers will not come on if it sense rain. I have one, and it works.

I had a sprinkler system put in my current home because of my garden - couldn't keep my flowers/shrubs watered properly
Have excellent water pressure and six zones with three heads a piece. My property is 1/2 acre, with about 45% in the back and 55% in the front.
Cost me $1,500 six years ago...

You could probably almost double that now. Contractors have gotten very expensive on Long Island. To top things off, they use illegals, which is saving them costs.

I had one put in at the same time, same number of zones, and for the same price! Property size was the same also (150x150 lot with the house smackdab in the center).

The sprinkler heads were a combination of lawn popups and risers in the perennial beds. As I kept removing grass in order to enlarge/create beds, the sprinkler guy made a pretty penny off me from all the calls to switch popups to risers!
