I made the mistake of going to Indian Island County Park this afternoon. Upon entering the park I noticed a terrible smell, when I got to the beach I saw why, piles and piles of dead fish washing up on the beach.
They were floating in the water as well. Biggest and foulest fish kill I ever seen. Must've had to do with all the nitrate runoff from the rains last week, this is an awful big price to pay for a green lawn.
I got pictures too, but I dont know if anyone wants to look at them, I know I'd rather not, I'm trying to get the image and stench out of my mind!
Wow, what a shame. We have them here in FL, too, and so far I haven't seen any of that type of fish again here. Nothing like killing off our own food is there?!! DUH

it happened last year too at this time, the entire Peconic River near the Aquarium & beyond was jam packed with dead fish. Its part of some semi-natural cycle.

It has someting to do with a natural pecking order.
We should just blame it on the runoff anyway.
We need some serious fed cash for stormwater remediation.
I asked someone I know who fishes, and they said the Bluefish eat Bunkers and surround them and then drive them on shore, where they die from low water levels, then they are eaten by the Bluefish and Sea Gulls. First time I ever saw a fish kill like that for sure. Lets hope the gulls eat em up before they start rotting, then the stench will get real bad!
