It could have, also, have been an "extortion" minority suit.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are famous for "holding up", companies, threatening all sorts of things, the most effective of which, is negative publicity a lawsuit would be, not including them showing up, in person, with a bevy of protesters, with the usual large amount of Tv news cameras, making a big deal everytime they "break" wind.

For a municipality, it could have similar consequences, like the local and island-wide banking institutions, coming down on them, not including the State and DC pols coming down on them and, maybe, turning off the $$$ spiget from Albany, and especially with that "Nutty" Nancy, and "Stimulas" Barak controlling the purse strings now !.

Some of these Liberals on the island, literally blanch, just at the thought of something like this on their precious doorsteps, and on Channel 12 news.

Especially, with today's Economy, it wouldn't take much to scare 'em into folding !

Money's tight even in Smithtown, I'm sure, to pay for a failed law suit.

It has happened and this is a part of Rev. Jesse and Al's Community Service work history.

But, you're right, since the IL governor scandal and Jesse Jr's involvement THERE, and Obama's election, the Reverend Jesse and the Reverend Al, have been below the radar, haven't they ?

Al's last media splash was having dinner with Caroline Kennedy at Sylvia's, and Jesse's was his famous blubbering photo op breakdown at Obama's election.

I guess they don't feel they have to extort people anymore, or somethin'.

Ummm Jesse Jackson JR was the INFORMANT in the IL Gov case.....

Anyway, this has nothing to do with Sharpton or Jackson. The names Jackson or Sharpton never even came up in this case so why even go there???

Fact of the matter is, as I mentioned earlier the most likely reason why the Town of Smithtown settled as quickly as they did here is because they pretty much knew they had very little legal ground to stand on.

Like Father, Jr. doesn't stray too far from the "tree", as it were !
AND, he gives new definition to the word, "informant". AMAZING, isn't it ! OH, well, nothing new here.

If you are curious, from the Chicago Sun Times...

What really happened with Jackson Jr., feds

Congressman talked with authorities about Blagojevich but never met them face-to-face

Smash - not just a poor legal case (I suspect the lawyers told them that going against their own policies was going to hurt them and make things complicated and expensive) but the cost of defending the suit in court was going to be higher than settling. The top reason for settling is that it's cheaper. Legal costs and the risk of a big judgment mean that it's often easier to settle.

Insurance paid the bulk of it, by the way.

You do realize that was a blog post "The views expressed in these blog posts are those of the author and not of the Chicago Sun-Times"

Anyway neither Jesse Jackson, his son, Al Sharpton nor the Illinois Gov case have anything to do with this case, so back to the topic at hand....

Jesse, Al, lawyers taking settlements? The rhetoric here has gone a little astray.

This was a case in which the town effectively cooked the books to keep minorities from qualifying for a federal program, simple as that. I always felt the town's actions were, besides being illegal, definitely un-American.

This case, which does involve legal fees to the plaintiffs, had a lead lawyer at a large law firm working for free. The fees go to the legal aid law office, a non-profit civil rights advocacy office. So its not legal fees for private lawyers sucking up the results of a class action lawsuit.
