Default For those who may not be familiar with East Massapequa

CleanCutHippie, you are right that the Village of Massapequa Park is in the middle: it's lies directly between the Hamlet of East Massapequa, on the east, and the Hamlet of Massapequa, on the west.

But, the Hamlet of East Massapequa is much larger than you think it is: according to the Nassau County Planning Commission, and as used by the Long Island Regional Planning Board and the Census Bureau, the Hamlet of East Massapequa (2,271 acres) is more than 3 times the size of the area that is in the Amityville Union Free School District (738 acres).

For those who may not be familiar with East Massapequa:

East Massapequa is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the southeast part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Massapequa in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of South Farmingdale; on the east by the Hamlet of North Amityville and the Village of Amityville in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County (the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line); on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Village of Massapequa Park.

East Massapequa is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of East Massapequa have a "Massapequa, NY 11758", "Massapequa Park, NY 11762" and "Amityville, NY 11701" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): https://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

CleanCutHippie, prior to 1990, the eastern-third of what is now the Hamlet of East Massapequa (i.e., the area east of Carmen Mill Road) was the Hamlet of West Amityville, and traveling west to east from the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line, there was the Hamlet of Massapequa, the Village of Massapequa Park, the Hamlet of East Massapequa and the Hamlet of West Amityville; then in 1990, concomitant with the 1990 Federal Census, the Hamlet of West Amityville was made part of an already existing Hamlet of East Massappequa.

Heading south from the SS Parkway, the area that lies west of County Line Road and east of Carmens Road, down across Sunrise Highway and east of Carman Mill Road, and east of "Carmen River" (the canal) used to be know as West Amityville because until 1974, it was West Amityville - literally the west side of Amityville - and it was in the 11701 zip code. In 1974, it became part of Massapequa in the 11758 zip code (or what people call East Massapequa - no one writes that as their address). Amityville was willing to give up the tax base from the village, but not from the school district, which is why it is still part of the Amityville school district today. I know this because at the time, I had to "move" from Amityville to Massapequa without leaving my house. So with all due respect to the 1990 Federal Census, they are wrong. The area in question was ceded to Massapequa 16 years earlier. Why you are not seeing it show in the 1980 Census is a mystery, but I assure you, it was part of Massapequa since 1974.

However you do have the All American burger ...which of course rules and may be reason enough to take up residence.

Redd Jedd, you're confusing the community name in a place's mailing address for the community that the place is actually in.

You need to bear in mind that the majority of places on Long Island, and this is especially true in Nassau County, are NOT in the community whose name is in their mailing address. https://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

You continue to confuse the name of the community in a place's mailing address with the actual community where that place is located: changing a ZIP Code postal zone does NOT change the community that you, or anyone else, was living in. You had been living in the Hamlet of West Amityville ("Amityville, NY 11701" mailing address) and, then after the borders of the postal zone were changed, you were living in the Hamlet of West Amityville ("Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address). Where you were living was never in the Hamlet of Massapequa even though it may have had a "Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address.

Massapequa is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: the Hamlet of Massapequa is 2,345 acres while the "Massapequa, NY 11758" ZIP Code postal zone is 5,128 acres, meaning that more than half the places with the "Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address are NOT in the Hamlet of Massapequa!

According to "Historical Population of Long Island Communities, 1790-1980" by the Long Island Regional Planning Board, 1982, the Village of Amityville was solely in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County and never included any area in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County; and, the Hamlet of West Amityville in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, was never part of the Village of Amityville.
