Does anyone know about Hofstra law? I'm interested particularly in tax law and wanted to see if they have a good program. Also what about Hempstead. Is it a nice town, stuff to do there?
I have only been to Long Island once and I was very impressed. I went to Port Washington, Oyster Bay, and the Huntington area. It seems like this is a less crowded, more rural part of the island. Great restaurants and pretty beaches.
There are two law schools on LI: Hofstra and Touro (which is in Bay Shore). Although I've no firsthand experience studying there, I do know that Hofstra Law has a very good reputation. Between LI and Manhattan, there is also St. John's University Law School located in Jamaica, Queens County. That school used to be in lower Manhattan but in the 1970s they moved to the new campus location in Queens.
Hofstra is not actually in Hempstead "proper". It's in the Township of Hempstead but not the Village. The campus itself may even be partly in Uniondale and partly in Garden City (it borders both communities). You probably do not want to be actually in the Village of Hempstead anyway. Trust me. The other surrounding communities are fine; they are typical suburban layouts and populations. Hofstra's location is convenient to all the parkways, shopping areas (one of the largest malls on LI is only a couple of miles at most from Hofstra's property) etc.... but you will need a car, or access to one, if you live here. Mass transit does exist but it can be a challenge to work out the logistics of getting from Point A to Point B efficiently!
Actually Port Washington and Huntington are not considered rural at all. Other than the beaches, that is. I noticed you only saw the North Shore beaches which are indeed pretty but you missed out on the South Shore ones which are on either the bay or the ocean. Just as nice but a different feel! If you liked the rural feel, you'd probably love to explore either of the Forks, where there are wineries and farms. I hope you get a chance for a return visit, because you've only seen a small portion of LI's natural beauty so far!

Haha well its rural in comparison to Staten Island or even parts of Northern New Jersey. Lot of open land + golf courses although it is of course $$$. Probably not a problem in the professions. Yeah have heard good things about the South Shore like the Jones Beach Theatre and Fire Island.
What I liked about the North Shore was the rolling hills and the little coves/bays. Also has a more relaxed feel and some nice towns.
The faculty is highly unapproachable. I have never met ruder registrar employees in my life! Your grades will NEVER come in on time… we are all stuck suffering long after our patience has expired to see how we did last semester. Ask Faye for anything, and she will say NO. Even our dean left. He claimed that leaving had to do with the long commute and to this school coupled with some health problems, but he had a personal driver – paid for by Hofstra-- escort him every day from Bklyn to Hofstra Law School. He had surgery, but normally people go back to work no more than 14 weeks after a bypass, but he decided to completely resign. I bet the administration here drove him nuts! The poor guy tried to improve the school, but everyone around him was so backwards that he just bailed. The school has no cafeteria, and it’s almost impossible to find food outside of the antiquated deli. Over the summer, the law school decided to REMOVE all of our furniture, removed our ONLY refrigerator, and microwave and we were stuck to figure out how to pack lunches that WOULD NOT SPOIL (since we had no fridge) and that we couldn’t heat (since we had no microwave) for the next 7 months! Room 230 is FREEZING! It is warmer outside. The bathrooms are filthy. Bathrooms are only cleaned ONCE in the morning—and since it’s a small building with 1200 students, they get dirty by 10 am…the night students suffer the most with the bathrooms (no soap or toilet paper after 5). There is no separate parking lot for law students, so undergrads park near the law school and we are stuck carrying heavy casebooks and lap tops across the tremendous campus. The average professor is either 80 or gay. You can complain at Hofstra until doomsday and no one will listen. No one cares about you in this administration & it is clear all they want is your money. The school fell from 2nd tier to third, and I'm not surprised. In fact, I was more shocked that this place ever made it to 2nd tier to begin with. I hate Hofstra, and I’m looking forward to graduating this May.
Yeah why would Touro move campuses. Huntington is nice and Central Islip well its more of a downmarket location. Cheaper rent, courthouse excuse lol.
