I probably have had some gay neighbors (actually one died of AIDS in 1992) but I am not aware of any gay couples buying a home on my block in Queens. Most people keep to themselves but I think people would talk if two men moved in together and were walking hand in hand on my block with a baby stroller. I don’t think they would be bothered or harassed but they would stand out at least at first. I don’t know about West Islip but I had a friend from a Mafia family who lived there on the water (not suggesting that has any implication for a gay couple). It was an expensive part of West Islip.
