No it wasn't. That's a complete fantasy. Unless it was a share with a bunch of people splitting the rent, there was no studio or 1 bd that could be had on a min wage job. Maybe 40+ years ago. Or hitting the rent control lottery, which isn't happening to any 18 yr olds. Even NYC is losing rentals to coop and condos exclusively.
But it was 40 years ago. I still remember going to look at a hole in the wall apartment on Thompson Street in the village in 1986. Your bathroom sink was your kitchen sink and the kitchen table was a door that you put over the dual-function sink. Luckily, this apartment had it's own bathroom, which was little more than a closet with a shower. Rent on this unit was $700/mo. I got there at 11 AM on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The line of prospective renters stretched down the block and around to w. 4th street. Ah, the golden days of my youth.
