Interesting article in today's Newsday about the tax challenge. It mentions that 70,000 town of Huntington taxpayers could be on the hook for $500 million in back taxes owed , which works out to over $7,000 per household if LIPA wins the challenge. For some reason all taxpayers in the town would be stuck although a very small percentage of them have benefited from a $2500 annual benefit now granted by LIPA.
Other residents in Brookhaven, North Hempstead and Hempstead towns would be liable for lesser amounts.
I read about this challenge years ago, now it seems LIPA is once again stepping it up.
This can end very very badly for people in certain areas. Take the Northport plant- people in Huntington will be on the hook, yes. But people actually in the school district itself can be clobbered.
This can really decimate property values. Who would buy a home knowing that they may out of nowhere owe $7,000 + have taxes go up by $3-4k per year.
I really hope for them it doesn't happen or a fair plan is put in place.
Island Park would become a ghost town if this happens.
