I'm thinking about adopting a dog. I'd prefer to avoid typical pet stores that get their stock from puppy mills. Instead, I want a dog that's a year or two old, good with kids, and smallish in size (35 pounds or less). Where are some places to start looking? I've demonstrated interest in a dog on Petfinder, but those dogs seem to get adopted quickly...

Thanks!

Check the shelters: Smithtown, Islip, Brookhaven etc.

North Shore Animal League is great and I hear good things about Sav-a-Pet in Port Jeff.

BideaWee in Wantagh, West Hampton or Manhattan.
They're a no kill shelter and it looks like they are giving cats and dogs away for free that are over 6 months old. This event ends today though.

All of the shelters recommended are good, there is also Little Shelter in Northport. You can also go through breed rescue if you are interested in a specific breed - most breeds have rescue groups in different regions (or national rescues that have reps located in different states). It's a bit more of an involved process - you would fill out adoption paperwork, have a home visit, and pay an adoption fee (which varies by rescue). They then try to match you with a dog that meets your criteria from the available dogs (all of which stay in foster homes, which is great as they live with the dogs and learn about their personalities). I got my dogs from a breed rescue (I was fostering and end up being a foster failure ).

I know quite a few people (including me) who've adopted from Last Chance Animal Rescue. I have also adopted from Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton. Great experience with both!

Look behind Hong Kong Gardens, Lo's East Kitchen, Foo Yu King, and a few others. Sometimes they are in the basement though so that would take some real planning.

They want a dog, not a cat

OP, any shelter is a good idea but I can't attest to their policies other than North Shore. They are very strict and will call your references. I know you're looking for an older dog but if you do want to adopt a puppy, they will ask loads of questions if anyone will be home during the day.
