Ideally, im trying to find a home that I could live in for at least 10 years. After that I might stay or even move on when my life situation is better, depending on how I feel about the area then. I even thought that since Hofstra is nearby, it might be ok and might be a source of income renting to students in the future. Maybe my thinking is wrong?

Do you work in the city or on LI?

If you work on LI then you should look east. Your money goes much further as you go further east so you can get better neighborhoods for the same price. Suffolk County is generally much less segregated than Nassau so you have a lot more options too.

I work in Queens at the moment. I am looking in Suffolk County as well-towns of Huntington, Babylon, and Islip. I really don't want to go more east than Islip.

Yeah, it's extremely hard for a single-parent family to have a decent quality of life anywhere on Long Island. Have you considered looking at more affordable parts of the country? I myself am eventually planning to leave (though I have no kids yet).

No, I have to stay local because I share custody. If I could move, I would be out of here so fast.

Why not Elmont? Also, Baldwin and Valley Stream of course. Each of these areas is vastly better than Uniondale. Valley Stream SD-30 has fairly low taxes, too, due to a strong commercial tax base.

OP you need to be more specific with respect to your budget. Exact range would be helpful.
People are giving recommendations and it would not matter if it doesn't match your budget.

Elmont will be more expensive than Uniondale but I would say it is marginally better (I would not be making a major investment into the neighborhood....and Hempstead Tpke & Elmont Road area looks worse than parts of Queens).

As always there are certain parts of *undesirable areas* that are nicer. And as a person of color, already looking into these areas, your tolerance level for this may (and I stress may) be higher than the average poster on this forum (or so they claim).

If you are looking at 10 years plus in a home, you cannot ignore how neighborhoods of color are perceived (whether real or not) on the Island. You should put Uniondale into Newsday and get a list of all the recent crimes/issues.

Fatal Shooting/Murder:
Joel Arquimides Ayala Deras arrested in fatal shooting of German Ismael Saravia Melendez, police say | Newsday
Bicyclist robbed cellphones from 2 teens, police say | Newsday
Domino's deliveryman robbed at gunpoint in Uniondale, cops say | Newsday
Lura J. Kearse, Kazeem O. Oladimeji arrested on drug charges, police say | Newsday
Cambria Heights man indicted in Uniondale burglary, officials say | Newsday
Ramel Myriee of Uniondale sentenced after 2 arrests in six months, DA says | Newsday

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Yes you are wrong.
You would want Hofstra students in your home with a young child? And do what, set up an illegal rental that someone may report you on (not many 2 family homes there). Not worth it and if you are dependent on that income to make the bills you really need to rethink your strategy on buying a home.

Apparently, you misunderstood. I said I'm buying a first home for my son and myself. I may move in the future and rent my home out-when I'm not living there.
