Dad just diagnosed with leukemia. Mom is a brittle diabetic. Live 8 blocks away. They are a big part of the reason I have stopped looking to move away from LI for now. With the new diagnosis, just can't see myself being happy with leaving them. Some things are more important than cheaper property taxes.

My Dad was a brittle diabetic. I have walked in those shoes. My mom had emphesema. She spent 6 months in the hospital and 6 more in rehab. My sister and I took rotating 3 night shifts at my parents home because dad would generally plunge in he middle of the night!. It is not easy you have my prayers.

It is not cut and dry, the family dynamics and cohesiveness or lack thereof, distance from parents and financial solvency all come into play.
Could have not said it any better.
By the grace of Almighty, I was blessed to be given the opportunity to take care of my parents. My mother left us a few years ago, and my father likes to live 3 to 4 months at each of his son's (me and 3 brothers) place every year. This way, he gets happy times with all the grand kids. My mother used to do the same.

As kids, we saw how our parents took care of my grand parents, and now our kids are seeing how we are taking care of our parents so hopefully it passes on from generation to generation.

I just want to say how much I am touched by reading these posts....that doesn't happen often on this forum haha. I am in my 30's and starting to deal with aging parents and declining health. It can get overwhelming at times but it is an honor and the best example of love I can give my children. Cheers and Blessings to you guys.
