You will get the most bang for your buck and the best commute by looking in Merrick. If you can find a home in Merrick Woods, just north of the train station, you can have less than a mile walk to the station, good schools, a nice downtown, about a 45-minute train ride (with no change in Jamaica) and all should be within your budget. Yes, taxes could easily be in the $15-20K range. But you would pay double in a place like Manhasset for similar amenities.
You could look south of Sunrise Highway in Merrick, but you have to watch out for areas that were inundated during Hurricane Sandy. Plus, Sunrise is not exactly pedestrian-friendly.
