Eisenhower, Wantagh, or Cedar Creek are probably better options than Hempstead Lake State Park.

I've only been there once but it did have an area with picnic tables and permanently installed charcoal grills - that was summer of 2001 though.

Valley Stream State Park is also good for grilling... it's right of the Southern State and they have a lot of charcoal bins

They have quite a few grills located in the park and it does not get too crowded on the weekend. There is also a nice trail around the lake and place for dogs to play. Its a really great park although you do have to pay to park your car.

You have to be a Nassau resident for Eisenhower. Belmont is a State Park. They have grills, paddle boats, and a play area for kids

The first word in the name of the park probably scares off quite a few people
