Every county has a cooperative extension. Check the blue pages or google it. They will give you all the info you could ever want and probably more about what to do, when.

I guess I should use the search function because I found a post of mine from 2009.

I never planted a garden because we joined a CSA for the last three years, but decided not to do it this year. I'm looking to start planting soon.

Depends what you are planning on growing.

After gardening for more years than I care to count both on LI and here in RI... I don't plant any vegs til at minimum May 15. April is just too risky.

Peas go in first as they prefer cooler temps.

You name it, I've probably grown it on LI... even corn.. though we had to fend off the raccoons.

I'd like to eventually plant the following:

Vegetables:
Tomatoes
Kale
Beets
Zucchini
Cucumber
Okra
Carrots
String beans
Peppers

Herbs:
Basil
Rosemary
Mint

Raspberries

I won't be planting all of this now. The herbs will be in pots, so that is simple. The veggies will probably be tomotoes, zucchini, cucumber, peppers and Kale/lettuce.

Don't overplant the zucchini - that stuff multiplies faster than rabbits.

Mint also spreads.

Basil, most tomatoes, and peppers practically grow themselves as long as you have lots of sun. I have not had much success with root vegetables like carrots. Too many insects. I have also found corn to be easy to grow.

What about raised flower beds? Has anyone gone that route? I'm thinking about making a couple boxes to put a long my backyard. My soil doesn't seem to drain that well, so this seems like it might be a good option.

Has anyone planted anything yet? I went to Hicks and bought a bunch of different lettuces. Also, some blueberry and raspberry bushes.

It's too early to put down the lettuce - try again in mid-May.
The blueberry bushes need at least 2 for cross pollination and if your soil is not acidic, then you need to spread some Plant-tone Sulfur mix into the soil. Blueberries like acidic soil. The raspberries tolerate most soils.
