Has anyone been the victim of a bad insurance practice/rate raise post Sandy?
Article in Newsday talks about one owner in Oceanside who's split level bottom is being considered a basement by insurance so it wont pay but her CO says its a 1st floor and the house has no basement.
My friend had an adjuster to her house two weks ago for some missing flashing and tiles...got a check for 7,000 within a week. Guess thise that with the cheapie carriers now are suffering. You pay for what you get
Still waiting for my insurance company to come across with $$$ - apparently they're trying to figure out how much of my damage they'll cover and what they'll pay for it :-(
And it's not a cheapie carrier...

Cheapie carriers? Are there any left on LI? I'm referring to someone I know who's insured with Allstate. I dropped Allstate two years ago when my homeowners coverage increased 40%--in one year--without any events.
Wait until renewal time rolls around, it'll be bloody. We're going to follow the Florida model.
Been with Allstate since 1987 - all my coverage is with them - auto as well.
No claims on homeowners ever, one auto accident in 2003 that they represented me in court, as I was sued by the passenger in the car that ran the red light and almost killed me (go figure). We won the case - zero liability.
We had some Sandy damage, tree fell against the house, messed up roof, siding and deck.
They settled the claim over the phone and sent check in 72 hours.
Just got my homeowners renewal........
No increase - I guess because my policy renews before they have the time to increase the price.
We use Kemper and they came right away and sent the check within a week (needed new roof thanks to Sandy). We'll see how much they raise our rates next fall.
Insurance should not go up. we are low risk compare to Florida. they get category 3 canes every other year. No real natural disaster threats on long island over 20 years except these freak two trop storms.
The lawyers will be making $$ on Sandy for many years
