My gas fireplace heats the house just fine when the power goes out. It'll get the upstairs up around 77.

With a base mounted fan, you can push the bulk of the heat into the living area. You wouldn't believe how it heats the entire first floor. The gas portion of the bill is probably trivial, the fan, well you know LIPA.

Stacked wood or piled will provide attractive shelters for critters. They will be in there whether or not you cover it. Place your wood far as possible from your home.
