Our original travel date to LI & NJ was 10/30.
Now to do a visit before winter (driving from Carolinas), we're looking at 12/5-11. We will be visiting in Long Branch, NJ, Bay Ridge Brooklyn, East Rockaway & Woodmere.
We had expected to stay with cousins in Belle Harbor for at least 2 of 4 nights, but that's out due to the storm damage in their neighborhood.
My question is should we attempt to do all this visiting knowing that we will need to book hotels, eat on the road & generally inject ourselves into an area that is already stressed? We haven't mentioned resheduling this visit to our family & friends yet. We want to hear how they're doing & get a general objective idea of how you all are recovering. No one on our itinerary had damage, but all were without power for 10-14 days.
We expect to keep our eyes & ears on the news stations to see how Thanksgiving travel works out for people. We would appreciate any opinions or news on the area.
We went up last weekend and it was business as usual - shopping centers packed, same with restaurants. We were in an area that mainly had trees down and power out (came back the day before we went)...no flood damage.
But I think it's pretty doubtful you will get a hotel room. Before you worry about anything else, I would start there.
very good point, twingles. the area is bustling and i'm sure the traffic will be insane come next week and in to december... but hotels *would* be your issue now.
I would start with the hotels too. I went shopping today and past 2 of the local dives and both had no vacancy. By reputation these places give fleas a bad name and they were full with cars in almost every spot.
Thanks, all. You're right that hotels are our biggest concern. We'll scope them out.
And BigBlue53, we actually have family coming down to us for Christmas per se. Wish we could do NYC/Hudson Valley Christmas, but not this year!
