My daughter will go to kindergarden next year and I would like her to attend the Mt.Sinai school as this is far better that RP school and I would like to provide her at least with the opportunities I was fortunate to have in terms of education. We live in Rocky Pt. and cannot move because we are underwater at this time and selling/ buying is out of discussion. We bought at peak. What are my options?
-buy new house in Mt.Sinai and rent RP house? out of discussion as I have no time to play as a landlord and hard to control tenant flow/quality.
-rent a room in Mt. Sinai? not in favor since this may place her as an outsider to her colleagues.
-pay tuition to Mt.Sinai school, most favorable for me as this would not lead to any criticism/discussion from other parents/kids. How much tuition goes for a year?
Please give me your toughs on this.
PS: greatly appreciated if ones refrains from being "smart", why RP schools are so great (do not believe), why did i buy in RP (does not matter) and so on, i am really looking for help from parent that went through something like this.
thank you in advance

My two cents.

I understand the need to start early for education but what a child will learn in kindergarten would be different in RP or MT?

Why not focus on saving money so that u could sell/move before middle/junior high school.

Instead of spending extra money teach your child yourself

I doubt it is what you want to hear but just my $.02

Truth be told the Elementary schools in RP are really good, ask a local Parent.
(Full time and Pre-K as well)

I suppose you could rent an apt in MS. I think it comes down to where you establish your primary residence.

Did you look at MP and SWR too?
MS is insanely overhyped.

Why not 3V if you want a real upgrade?

My first (and only) question is this: What is giving you the perception that the Mount Sinai School District (at elementary level) is superior to the Rocky Point School District elementary school?

According to the latest ELA & Math Assessment scores for NYS Elementary Schools (2011-2012):
Mount Sinai ranked #365 out of 2287.
Rocky Point #1052 out of 2287.

Both above average for NY.
#365 is very good for MS, but is it worth paying that kind of premium for (extra tuition)? IDK.

365 Mount Sinai Elementary School
Mount Sinai Union Free School District
Mount Sinai
KG 04 916 16.1 81.5 77.3 158.8
---------------------
1052 Joseph A Edgar Imtermediate School
Rocky Point Union Free School District
Rocky Point

What is the possibility that the OP's child is accepted to MS schools? If it were that easy to do, every parent would do the same.

Mt Sinai does not allow children to come in district by paying tuition. They used to do this, but no longer have the room and no longer allow out of district children.

Rent or move in a few years?

Firstly,
Its Kindergarten, let your kid have fun in RP elementary, trust me RP or Jericho, it should not matter that much. So you have another year to think about this, relax.

Now, I do second starwinds suggestion.
Assuming that schooling standards is the only worry you have, see if you can do some home schooling or send the kid to Kumon etc whatever of your choice to get the extra coaching that you think your kid needs. Frankly speaking public school education is realy a bad value for money out here anyway (purely talking finance here, please note, I'm not saying schools are bad) and since you are ready to spend the extra money, spend it properly.

Kindergarten is not going to make or break your child. She should be fine in RP, and as noted by a Mt. Sinai resident on this thread, Mt. Sinai will not allow out of district residents, so that's that unless you want to move. The age when quality of LI schools tend to diverge sharply is in Middle School/Jr. High and up. Don't worry so much.
