Cold Spring Harbor!
backroads to Melville, has good train service, and outstanding schools.
Should be something in your budget closer to the train than the water
Cheers,

Not much inventory at that price range, but the Cold Spring Harbor Train Station is great! With the expansion of their parking lot and the reduction of employees in the financial field you MIGHT find a spot at your desired time, but it's not a given. Commuted from there for close to 20 years...
Agreed on CSH. West Hills or Cold Spring Hills are also a good options. Both are near the CSH train station, and by taking backroads you can be in Melville in minutes (few realize Sweet Hollow Rd will take you from Jericho Tpk. to Old Country Road & 110 in about 6 minutes.

Agreed, the station is great. Parking can still be a problem after 8am though. It fluctuates. Some days 1/3 of the lower lot is open and some days cars are forced to park illegally all over the curbs and grass. They've also been ticketing a lot more than they have in the past. If you're heading in at peak-of-peak and can park, its a nice 50 minute ride to Penn.
I work in Melville and live in Baldwin. Takes me 30 -45 min to commute to Melville and I also have to commute to my firm's Manhattan office and it's about a 65 min commute to Penn Station via LIRR. The Babylon LIRR line is one of the more reliable lines of the LIRR. Unfortunately the parking lots are all full by 8 am so you would have to park and walk a bit or get there by 7:45 am.
I would recommend Queens. If your budget is $750K that should get you a decent house in Queens and NYC taxes just don't compare to the crazy 10-20K property taxes you would pay for CSH, Huntington, Manhasset or anything in Town of Oyster Bay. From my parents home in Woodhaven, getting to Melville is a good 45 min drive on the Northern State.
I would say certain areas of Port Washington, Manhasset. Great LIRR line. Drive to Melville (reverse commute) shouldn't be too bad.
If you didn't need to be in NYC as much you could move further east. I work in midtown and get to work around 7:40. My wife works in Melville because it not only was a really good job but wanted to be close to home for our young children. We started in Huntington and recently moved to Greenlawn. She can be at her office in 20-30 minutes. It takes me about 90 minutes door to door taking the LIRR out of Huntington.
