I have a 2 year old, who is simply delayed in speech and some cognitive skills. He has made great progress through ei. I would like him to go to school to get even more help. Who can recommend a school where they have had a child there who was simply delayed and it helped them out? HAs anyone heard of alternatives in Melville, etc.?

You should be allowed to go through EI until 3 I thought. Maybe it's different in Suffolk. Our twins at 2yo didn't have much of a vocabulary either but by 2.5 they were blabbering non-stop. At 3 there was just no way to allow them to do any further programs based on test results. If you can, stick with EI a bit longer and test again toward the end of the year. Many kids don't speak all that much at 2 unless they've been doing it for weeks/months before that.
Also make sure he has no hearing issues as that may be the root cause of developmental delays.
My 2 1/2 is going through ei right now and the op has to do is ask the pediatrician or make the call and they will schedule some time to setup a meeting. The folks we work with are very nice and they accommodate our schedule for meetings and such since we both work in the city.
Alternatives for children is fantastic. I had both my sons there ; one was in the afternoon program and received OT and Speech there. My younger son only had speech.
I cannot say enough about it. But they were 4 when they started there. Until then, they had speech and ot thru Early intervention in our home.
No sure where you are located, but my son attended Just Kids Learning Center in Lindenhurst. It was a wonderful, progressive school. They helped my son tremendously. He was diagnosed with speech delay when he was 2, along with some receptive, and processing delays. He attented that school for a year and 1/2 and is now in kindergarten in our school district. Check them out, they were amazing.
My 3year old was in EI until August and just started Variety in September. She was originally diagnosed with speech delay but will likely test on the spectrum. We could not be happier with Variety. We wanted Little Village but it is very hard to get a nursery spot there. We also toured Barbara C Wilson and were so not happy that we never went back in after we had a diaper emergency. My husband said it felt like a place you dump your kids. She is doing really well at Variety. She skips into her class every day. She gets speech and OT and we love all her therapists and our Social Worker. She even offered herself up to do our Parent Training in our home. They care about her and she is thriving there. They have many workshops and support groups for parents as well. Our daughter stayed with EI until her 3rd bday but she is doing so much more since she started school.
