Mangano to cut 700 Nassau County jobs
Top Stories Item

Quote:
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano on Wednesday announced that he will eliminate 700 more jobs, consolidate police precincts and require all employees to contribute 25 percent to their health insurance -- but will not raise taxes to close a $310 million budget gap next year.
When this article was first published it said he was to cut 1,000 jobs.

Here's an interesting bit:

Quote:
The new cuts would drop the full-time employees to 7,400. Twenty years ago, the county had 16,000 full-time employees.
As usual, there are more questions than answers:

Do the job eliminations include his patronage appointments or are they exempt from it?

Are the police included in that "all employees to contribute 25% to their health insurance?"

(I also think 25% is steep to ask of the lower-paid employees. A sliding scale would be more fair.)

What police precincts are going to be consolidated?

Mangano is doing a great job. Someone has to clean up the mess, the gluttony over the last 20 years. He's not a bad guy for doing this. If it were suozzi he would have raised taxes thirty percent. 25% toward health care is about in line with private sector and the federal government employees. They were paying 0 toward it until this budget.

Tax Revolt. We cannot take any more tax increases. Thank you Ed.

Doing a great job versus the last twenty years? you realize that Ed's NC political career dates back at least 16 of those 20 years, and twice during that time he's either led or assisted in blowing a huge hole in the county budget by his <in> actions? If he's so concerned with his "tax revolt" where has he been on the tax cert issue for almost two decades?

Mangano knows he's a one term politician. This is desperation on his part. He knows full well he can't open contracts which are legally binding and negotiated in good faith.

Mangano caused the counties problems by eliminating the energy tax and the necessary tax increases suozzi had planned. Nassau's taxes haven't been raised since 2000/1.

He also gets a fat pension and a $200,000 salary.

Total hypocrite!

Hey great more people out of work during a period of record unemployment. Certainly this means good things for the county when these 700 can no longer pay their mortgages.

The county budget will never be served by little nickle and dime cuts like this that just hurt average people. We need real reform like consolidating school districts, eliminating duplicative administration in school districts, water districst, etc., addressing police overtime and retirement compensation, we're just bleeding slowly.

On a macro scale, a recovery for the county depends on the economic recovery of this nation. Unfortunatley, austerity is the name of the game in Washington due to the terrorist fringe of the Republican Party who are interested paramount in destroying our government.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story, while I don't watch much tv, I do know that he has 2 kids and both are minors, by several years, so they are not working.

This seems in line with the Tea Party mantra. Members are all in favor of doing things to cut spending and save money until it is realized that it will actually affect them personally. Suddenly that good idea is not so good anymore.
