There are only two houses currently on the market with an asking price of less than $600K. You need to go up to the mid to high $600's to find a bit more inventory.
Port Washington on the other hand has quite a few houses on the market in your desired price range. Of course we don't know what size house or property you're looking for as that can change things on Port Washington, but over all, it looks more affordable.
And yes, the NYC income tax is a trade-off with the higher Long Island RE taxes, somewhat more in Port Washington...

Which area are you referring to besides PW? If I live in Queens and work in LI, is there a commuter tax or any sort of double tax that I have to worry about? I live in a McMansion in atl and would like to have a place with at least 2600 or so sq ft. I know I can't get what I have now but would like to be comfortable.
You wrote that "The job is located in Little Neck ... " Little Neck is a neighborhood in the New York City Borough of Queens.
Is there any part of Little Neck that's in LI? I wonder if I got it confused with Great Neck... yup. Went and checked and the job is located in Great Neck.
Went and checked and the job is located in Great Neck.
Great Neck is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address (6,022 acres) are not in the community (866 acres):
Places that have a "Great Neck, NY 11020 through 11024" mailing address that are not in the Village of Great Neck are in the Village of Great Neck Estates, the Hamlet of Great Neck Gardens, the Village of Great Neck Plaza, the Hamlet of Harbor Hills, the Village of Kensington, the Village of Kings Point, the Village of Lake Success, the Village of Russell Gardens, the Village of Saddle Rock, the Hamlet of Saddle Rock Estates, the Village of Thomaston and the Hamlet of University Gardens.
You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that job is located and where you will be working, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that location's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP, or Census Designated Place, is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

2600 square feet in Port Washington under 600K is going to be very difficult. Think more like 1200-1800 square feet.

This is true, but remember that USUALLY finished basements are not included in the total square footage in NY. I'm not sure if that is true for Atlanta. So a 1800 square foot house with a 700 sq ft finished basement, could be a lot of living space....

sorry, I was referring to a previous post where Little Neck was recommended.
You mention the sq ft but not the desired number of BRs and baths or how important property size is - can make a difference in terms of applicable location...
