I agree with most of the responses... Anyone looking for great schools, commute to NYC, and homes in Nassau county will look at the two Necks: Great Neck (kings Point, Saddle Rock, Harbor Hills, and Great Neck Estates), Manhasset, the Plandome (Plandome, Plandome Manor and Plandome Heights), Munsey Park, Flower Hill, Port Washington (Manhasset Bay Estates, Beacon Hill, and Sands Point).

(Although I do live in Port Washington, I do not live in one of the neighborhoods mentioned.)

Basically, you have to figure out what is more important to you like public school rankings (or private schools), demographics of your neighbors, and your architectural tastes. Each neighborhood has a different feel.

If you are interested in the quality of the school district, I would look for a house where your kids would attend either Syosset or Jericho. Syosset tends to have more Jewish students while Jericho has more Christian students, if this makes a difference to you. Great Neck is also a good district- North has a huge Persian community while South has a larger Asian community. Cold Spring Harbor is also a highly regarded school district.

But, you also want to consider if you want your kids in this type of a highly competitive environment. The schools are all high quality but there is a huge pressure to succeed and I see a lot of stressed out students on a daily basis.

These many villages and hamlets -- Kings Point, Saddle Rock, Harbor Hills, Great Neck Estates, Manhasset, Plandome, Plandome Manor, Plandome Heights, Munsey Park, Flower Hill, Port Washington and Sands Point -- are separate communities, not neighborhoods. Actually, each of these villages and hamlets are sub-divided into neighborhoods.

NYS Geographic Glossary and Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
