Manuals are going the way of the buggy whip. I just bought a new car and wanted something that got good gas mileage. While checking out the mileage on the stickers I was surprised to see the automatics now gets the better gas mileage.
I have steptronic and while it's fun once in a while I'd hate to drive with that full-time. As I read in a car magazine once... how ridiculous does one feel driving through a parking lot shifting through the gears?
Been driving stick since day 1. I actually prefer it in all but the worst traffic jams. When I'm in traffic, I leave it in gear (usually 2nd) and then don't have to use the brakes much at all. Since the car will slow down when you let off the gas (autos will coast) I just give a little more/less gas as needed and don't ride the bumper of the guy in front of me. Most automatics with manual shift will hold a gear when you let off the gas as well.

Why would someone feel ridiculous shifting gears while driving through a parking lot? If my rpm indicate the need to shift, I am going to shift.
Does the steptronic have a clutch pedal, or are you just moving a gearshift selector on the column or gearshifter?
Driving manual also has the "fun" factor. I take the challenger out and just drive to nowhere. I never did that in any other car just to drive it. It's also a pain since I can't drive it everywhere and anywhere now, but man what a rush.
I've been driving a stick for 2 years, its a whole lot more fun than an auto and I love how you have more control of the car. But if I had to drive everyday in stop and go traffic then I'd might consider an auto.
It seems like nowadays people are too busy talking on the phone to shift gears.
Here's my rule of thumb. The only time that you purchase a manual is when you get a pickup truck or a REAL sports car (Lotus, Ferrari, Lambo, Vette) and not a fake(mits.eclipse, tiburon) one. If you are using the vehicle for commuting and have to deal with stop and go,rush hour traffic, IT SUCKS !!!!
