There are discussions afloat to cancel this years Notting Hill Gate Carnival which is the biggest outdoor Festival in Europe, due to the ongoing street disturbances and looting.

Is this the right way to go or is it allowing thugs to dictate London's social/cultural agenda?

I think we should learn from the Norwegian reaction a couple of weeks ago and not make rash decisions and not let extreme events like this change the way we go about things. Whether or not it will be cancelled, or whether that would inflame things further, I don't know.

Edit - just heard the England football match is off on Wednesday because police resources might be needed elsewhere.

Looks like the Carnival will go ahead after all. The police fellow in charge of the Met seems to be in favour.
Right way to proceed I feel. Carry on as normal.

Last time I went to carnival it was a dismal overcrowded rip off festival.

Bad decision riots frequently happen at the end of the carnival.

Example

2010

The government is asking for trouble letting this years carnival go ahead.

Plan is I believe to close it earlier than usual. Sounds like a good idea as most the trouble occurs after dark.

yea but the recent riots haven't started in the dark, it kicked off in Hackney about 1.30 in the afternoon and about 3.00 pm in Lewisham.
But on the other hand with everyone getting nicked at the moment there is a chance it could be the safest carnival ever, who knows we may not even get a stabbing this year well we can dream.
