Hi,
I am planning on attending the part-time law program at UNLV this next fall. I am married with two children and I have a few questions about living in Las Vegas. Here they are:
1. Since I will be attending the part-time program I will be looking for employment. I recently saw that the unemployment rate in Vegas is around 13%. Sometimes numbers are deceiving, how bad is it? What sectors of the economy are hiring, if any?
2. Which areas of the Las Vegas valley are affordable, safe, and offer good elementary schools for my two children? (I heard Summerlin is nice, what do you say?)
3. Do you like living in Las Vegas? What do you like or dislike about living there? What aspects of Vegas do you like or dislike when it comes to raising a family?

Any other information you can share with me about your experience living in Las Vegas would be great.

Thanks

1. Since I will be attending the part-time program I will be looking for employment. I recently saw that the unemployment rate in Vegas is around 13%. Sometimes numbers are deceiving, how bad is it? It's terrible and the few jobs that there are don't pay much. Make sure you have ALOT in savings before your move. I was looking for over 6 months.. ended up at a lower paying jobWhat sectors of the economy are hiring, if any?none, i even heard medical is much slower now
2. Which areas of the Las Vegas valley are affordable, safe, and offer good elementary schools for my two children? (I heard Summerlin is nice, what do you say?)the homes are very affordable, we are the most undervalued city in the country.. as for kids, can't tell you since i don't have any.. but if i did i can guarantee i wouldn't have moved to las vegas
3. Do you like living in Las Vegas? yes definitelyWhat do you like or dislike about living there? love the weather, accessibility to everything at any hour, lower taxes.. so far don't likes: people very hard to get used to... drivers are nuts What aspects of Vegas do you like or dislike when it comes to raising a family? can't answer, but my 3 dogs love it here... lastly, if you are doing the attorney thing, i believe you will have unbelievable competition.. there are way too many attorneys here in my opinion.. (no offense meant)... every other commercial is an attorney

Any other information you can share with me about your experience living in Las Vegas would be great.

Thanks

Yes, the unemployment situation here is that bad.

I grew up in Vegas, which is why I live in Henderson (which by the way is actually about 30 minutes closer to UNLV than living in the Summerlin corner of Vegas).....

Good Luck!

The unemployment rate is an unknown factor anywhere in this country.

And so is the underemployment rate.

The real, true figures are too frightening to be printed.

Analysts say our unemployment is closer to 20%, you don't want to come here unless you have a job especially if you have a family. 1 in 82 house holds are in foreclosure. Bankruptcies are on the rise already this year.

Summerlin and Henderson are great area's but can be pricy. Gaming revenue is down,
The governor and the Legislature consider plans to cut the state budget because of a deficit of nearly $900 million.

Education is expected to take the brunt of any cuts because it accounts for a substantial part of the state budget. Other services — and the quality of life — will suffer, as well.
The schools in Nevada are rated at the bottom, since you have children you will likely want them in a private school especially since the state is talking about laying off teachers and making class rooms bigger than they all ready are which already to many.

There was just a walk out at UNLV by students protesting the cuts and raising of tuitions.

We moved here because of the great weather and lots to do, but if you don't have any money it's not so fun. Good Luck

As for the attorney side. A good friend of ours is a licensed attorney in another state. When she moved to Vegas she went into another field because there are SO MANY lawyers already in Vegas.

So part of the decision should also be whether or not you can get a job as a lawyer once you have your license.

The employment situation is that bad. I moved to Vegas for a job, and was laid off 3 months later. After searching for 3 months, I ended up moving to Utah to find a job. I would recommend bringing 6-8 months of cash (at least) if you are going to do this. I think the best area for being affordable & "nice" is North Las Vegas. I lived in Aliante & really enjoyed the area. Cannot comment on the schools, however.

Don't move to Vegas. Within three months you will have dropped out of law school, left your wife, moved in with a stripper named "Versace", and be working as a bouncer at a nightclub.

Damn...that could have been me...30 years ago.. If you can weather the storm, it could be one hell of a ride...almost better than 8 seconds on "Bodacious". Best done alone...it is a rough, unfair ride for a young family !

Every poster here is telling you the truth...moving to Vegas at this time, with a young family might be a poor decision. The law school is decent, however like one poster said, there are alot of starving attorneys in Vegas. They graduated with debt, tried to live the lifestyle, and are now selling foreclosures...

We have spent well over 30 years in the area you seek. Our daughter is pursuing her post grad degree elsewhere....what's that tell ya....good luck !
