I grew up in a small quiet town called vernon in NJ. I liked it there but there wasnt realy much going on there as far as employment, my sister moved to hollywood about 2 years ago because shes doing modeling and dancing at genlemans clubs and makes good money. (im 27 shes 23) She talked me into moving here becuase she saw that i wasnt really doing much in my home town of Vernon (fairly expensive housing very high property taxes and little employment opportunities). So ive been in hollywood for about 2 months and i have to say i dont really like it. Everything is expensive especially the housing, theres traffic loud noise and pollution everywhere its a hassle to just leave the apartment and go shopping (having to walk through the apartment bulding into an elevator, down into the parking garage, then once im in my car, manuever my way out of the parking garage with cars all around me, drive through traffic into more parking garages pay for parking and look for a place to park). In my home town i would simply walk out the front door to my house hop in my car, leave, have a nice quiet drive to my destination and easily find parking for free no matter where i go. Theres alot of clubs and bars and stuff like that around hollywood but im not into that, i like to mainly spend time at home, go out with friends to the movies, rideatvs, work on cars, chat on the computer/browse the web, play video games stuff like that. I guess it might be all just a big culture shock to me, but i just dont think ill like it here, period. Im a big fan of atv riding and have been most of my life. In my home town i have a garage i can keep my atv in which i can simply hop on ride into the woods and join my friends. NO way id be able to do that here, theres not even a place i can keep an atv. Then my sister started talking about las vegas and how its so cheap to live there. After looking up some information the more and more i like what i see. A nice luxury 4 bedroom house will cost less than the crappy 2 bedroom apartment that were in right now in hollywood. Plenty of places to ride, plus i would have my own garage that i can keep my atv and car in (i also love working on cars and do it all the time in my home town). Im living with my brother sister and mom right now and were probably gonna move to vegas because we all like what we see especially me. Eventually me and my brother will probably get our own house there becuase its so affordable. My brother also loves to ride atvs. Few questions, What would be the best place to move to so that i can pretty much hop on my atv at my house and just ride right into the desert without any problems (my sisters looking at houses in a place called summerlin she says its a nice place to live), Is there a decent job market there for auto mechanics? or any other job for that matter (im also good with computers and electronics). Why is the housing so cheap? is the hot weather really bad? what if any bad things is there about living there? any other comments that might be helpfull please mention. Thanks for taking the time to read my long, boring post. lol

You really need to think this move over very carefully.
It sounds like you like a country type of living and if you are going to get that it won't be in Summerlin. You can't get on a atv anywhere there and go ride in the country.

You would be better off living in Pahrump which is only 60 miles from Vegas, there are places close to the desert like North Las Vegas in the newer area but you will have to trailer your ATV. You cannot work on cars on at your home if you live in Summerlin the HOA's would prohibit it and in Henderson if you go to older parts of Henderson that doesn't have HOA's you may find more what your looking for.

As for jobs in movies the do film allot of movies here if you have an agent they may get you lined up for some jobs. There are some talent agencies that place actors in movies that come to town. I have done some extra jobs on some major motion pictures, I haven't tried lately the pay for an older extra doesn't pay enough to pay for the gas.

The casinos have layed off allot of workers and are working with the minimum employees to keep costs down. If your interested in Law enforcement you might want to go to school and become a policeman they seem to be hiring.

Houses are cheap here due to the housing bubble allot of foreclosures, unemployment is 13.9%they say it's more like 20% because there is allot of undocumented unemployed .
Even exotic dancers are having trouble making a living here, attorneys are loosing jobs,it doesn't matter what type of work your in, there is at least 13,000 homeless people here, . Automobile dealerships have scaled back, I recommend you don't move here unless you have secured a job and have a nest egg.

If you have poor credit getting a rental isn't going to be cheap either, most rentals now are requiring 1.5% to 2% times the deposit, along with the other fees that go along with renting a property.

Good luck

Whenever and if I get to Vegas...the deserts/mountains look so enticing for a ATV...what does that mean to trailer your ATV?

I'd love to get one, but unsure all I'd need to do to keep one...is it possible to just park it in the garage?

Or 'trailer it' means to have some type of trailer to take it out of the city limits before riding it?

you are right, it was a culture shock to you. and vegas I'm assuming would be too. and are you so unaware of what is going on with the economy that you dont know why the housing is so cheap here? the housing market CRASHED!!! Nevada was one of the hardest hit. and that you could easily get a job? My advice to anyone would be why would you move somewhere where you dont already have a job lined up? I mean, i guess with your stripper sister, you are assuming she could probably get a job anywhere, but doesn't she have some future goals in mind as well? the economy is crap right now even if they say "are are out of the recession". Vegas is supposed to be this thriving place, but it's not right now... I would take that highly into consideration when moving somewhere "hoping" to get a job. I'm not sure why people dont understand this. I am sure there are those few that get lucky but overall... think it over! I wouldn't want to live in Hollywood either, so I don't blame you.

Secondly, have you ever visited Las Vegas? It's not too far, maybe you should. It's the desert. it's a LOT different from where you grew up and Hollywood. If you dont like bars and clubs and such im sure you can stay away from that, but Vegas is known for it's night life.

as for your ATV riding, I know up in Reno where I currently live there are so many places that you can ride, and still be in the biggest little city in the world. For example I am sure you can take a drive from Las Vegas and find dunes somewhere... but Reno there are some right there 5 minutes from down town. I mean, im no expert as I am certainly not an ATV rider... way too much of a girl. but when im running around with my dogs out in the open spaces, i see the trails

anyways you sound old enough to realize that you should do way more research... The desert is not for everyone either.

Living in Las Vegas is like living in the city. You won't be living in Summerlin and be able to hop on the ATV and ride off for a day of fun in the desert. Everything is pretty much built up and paved over.

You might be able to afford a custom type home, ones that are not in more densely populated areas, and they sometimes have easier access to BLM land to ride the ATV. Those homes are usually pretty expensive.

Unless you find something on the perimeter of the Las Vegas valley, you'll be living in densely populated, paved over, shopping stores with traffic type neighborhoods.

A lot of neighborhoods are in master plan communities and/or in HOA type communites which would prohibit you riding the ATV anywhere within the communities' confines. You'd have to have a vehicle with a trailer to bring the ATV to places to ride. One of the places that comes to mind is Apex. A friend of my son goes there on the weekends with his Dad to ride their ATV. They trailer the ATV to Apex and then trailer it home.

Working on your car in your garage or driveway? You can forget it if you live in most of the HOA's here in the Las Vegas valley. Granted, some HOA's will allow you to do so, but most won't. And don't even think about doing that in Summerlin. One phone call from a disgruntled neighbor (in most HOA's) and that will stop you. If you want to work on your car in the garage/driveway, DON'T buy a home in a neighborhood or master plan with CC & R's (i.e. HOA's) unless you know the rules and will abide by them. There are plenty of neighborhoods with NO HOA's.

You'll probably enjoy living in Las Vegas over Hollyweird. Take a trip here and rent a car, keeping away from the tourist corridors. Drive neighborhoods, see Summerlin for yourself...only then can you get an idea of whether Las Vegas will fit your needs and dreams.

Good luck in whatever you do!

I suggest you come check it out for yourself.

I also suggest you not come here unless you have a job. Unemployment is bad here and jobs are hard to find. Even low pay jobs are hard to find. People are just scraping by.... So think carefully!

Las Vegas is a city. We have traffic and parking garages too even though most of them are free. There aren't many easily accessible areas where you can just jump on your atv and ride. The areas I can think of where this is doable are quite expensive. Pahrump immediately comes to mind. That's a smaller town about 80 miles west of Vegas.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the response guys. This morning i woke up to find an eviction notice on the door of my apartment! it seems the person were renting the aparmtent from hasnt told us its about to be foreclosed, so we have until saturday to move out and it looks like it will be vegas or bust. A far as employment there i have a friend there who works at a window washing company (manager or something) that said he can get me a job cleaning windows starting at around 13 an hour so ill take that until i find a job more to my liking. So you guys are saying summerlin isnt a good place to move if i like to work on cars in the garage and ride atvs? what if i work on my car in a closed garage, no one will see right? What does HOA mean neighborhood rules or something? if not summerlin what would be the best town to move into that would be best suited for me (so i can work on cars and ride atvs without a problem) and closest to the vegas strip (thats what my sister wants).

Close to the vegas trip is probably the worst place to live in Vegas. the strip itself is fun and exciting... but the neighborhoods surrounding there, not so good. i can only guess that she thinks she's gonna be working on the strip? Well there are not strip clubs directly on the strip, near there yes, but it's not like they are inside the casinos, thank god.

HOA stands for Homeowner's association. These are rules and regulations set forth that whoever lives in the area has to abide by. I currently have one where I live, and im actually not really liking it to much. I get fined for having my garbage can outside, had my dog's crate on the porch once... etc. etc. etc. Although I do think they help to keep things nice, sometimes it's just a little out of control. and really how worth it is it. regardless, depending on what HOA you are with, they may have limits on what you can park, how many cars you can park, noise, the list can go on and on and on and on... what they do for you in return varies a lot too. Personally mine takes care of my front yard and the "common areas" which includes walkways and shrubs and such. and any exterior on my house. but by the time i need a new roof im sure i wont be living here. however they dont even shovel the snow on our streets so that is a sour point for me.

Anyways, Summerlin is expensive compared to other parts, as it is nicer, so im not sure you'll find a place anyway.

Good luck.

Ok, well any recommendations to a town that would be good for my lifestyle without HOAs and still be a nice place to live? The cost is not that important becuase im sure itll still be nowhere near as expensive as hollywood.

You were asking about tailoring your ATV most ATV users that are in the city have to put their ATV on a ATV trailer and pull it behind their truck or suv.

We have so many foreclosures here that if you rent something you have to make sure that the landlord won't foreclose on you here so you will have to monitor it weekly, by checking sites linked the assessors office.

Be careful there has been scams here where people have rented homes that weren't there's.

You really need to be very careful here, there is so many ways to get into trouble here without even meaning to whether financial trouble or if you have any addictions drug, alcohol, gambling, sex, food anything, it's here.

Best of luck
