My fiance and I are planning a possible move to a Las Vegas suburb within the next few years. She's is currently in school obtaining her Master's degree in structural engineering. It seems like Vegas with it's many buildings is a great area for jobs in this field. Does anybody know the job market for structural engineering in Las Vegas? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Things aren't too good in Vegas right now for anyone without a job. Perhaps things will be a bit better when you are ready to move. I would suggest you have a lot of money saved and be prepared to be unemployed for a while.

It's going to be years before we see new major construction projects like City Center. The economy is going to have to improve considerably.

I'd suggest looking in Seattle. There's tons more engineering going on in general in Seattle. Also, many architects are based in Seattle because it's an environment that many of them like to live in.

I can't say about Vegas, but I lived in Phoenix which is similiar and there were hardly any engineering jobs....mostly construction. Seattle is a much better bet.

Right now building has either stopped or limping along, vegas has a 13.1% unemployment rate. As the other bloggers have said you need to have money saved up and or a job before you get here.

I suggest you not only read articles on what is happening in Vegas from national papers, but look in the local papers. You will find out allot more in local papers regarding the economy and housing market than the large news papers.
Here is a couple of links to the local news papers: Las Vegas Sun

Other than the casinos (which are often designed by national firms that aren't in Las Vegas), there's never been a lot of "big building" work in Las Vegas- an occasional 6-8 story office building, but otherwise minor projects structural-wise. That said, most of the engineering firms in Vegas aren't "big project firms", and many are mom-and-pop shops.

Add in the current poor economy and a trend toward outsourcing, and you're not likely to find an abundance of positions. If she's interested in working for the bigger firms, most opportunities will be either in NYC or LA, but I'd start with looking at websites for companies like Walter P. Moore, Thornton-Tomasseti, etc., to see where they have satellite offices.

With flaws of the City Center project its seems structural engineers may not be considered a necessity on Vegas projects.
