hmmm, I'm getting a really creepy vibe that you may have been to Omaha, many times. It's ok though, your cool now......you currently reside in Vegas!
Hope you dont have to move away for some reason, like lets say to WV. You would "have" to borrow your sister then.

put it this way....i know what aksarben is!

i went to creighton for my undergrad, so i was there for 4 years...i do miss the dubliner down in old town, and for what is worth, the blue jay on campus. that and it is hard to get a bad steak in that town (used to pop up to mr. c's frequently)

and i plan to stay away from anyplace that has any substantial mosquito population (aka humid places - SE, midwest, east, etc.). i've donated enough blood

Let me preface this by saying that I am not trying to sound elitist in anything that comes across in this post. I can easily see why someone would want to move and stay in Las Vegas.

My question is, for people who live there now, what kind of people make up the huge influx of people that make Las Vegas such a fast growing metro? What I mean is, I was raised in Connecticut and ended up fortunate enough to end up at some pretty nice universities. I am really an academic at heart (albeit a conservative one, rare these days), and while I have no disrespect for less educated or blue-collar workers, I want to be in an environment with people that share my interests. My current field of practice is law.

So, is it hard to find the more quiet, intellectual types in Vegas? Is it more of a hedonistic location? I am quite honestly concerned that a lot of people that move there are "last chance," running from previous life/the law/bad marriage, or just people who love to gamble in general. Would you say that there is a lack of professionals in the city?

Thanks guys, and I mean no disrespect if it comes across that way- I love Vegas.
As someone considering the area and currently from Maryland, I guess I would say the same reason people move to all the other fast growing places across the Sunbelt. Warm weather, more inexpensive living, a more laid-back lifestyle, etc, at least compared to the East Coast or California. However the cost of living and the weather is probably the biggest thing. Here in Maryland's DC suburbs the average single family home nowaday costs $1.2 million and even if you have that kind of money it ain't worth it when you can move to Nevada (or Arizona or NC) and buy a much bigger house with a much bigger yard and save that money to buy a nicer car and go on vacation more. A lot of people moving to Nevada are from ridiculously overpriced places like California or the East Coast.

So what if the summers are hot? You can always travel elsewhere. Its harder to escape Maryland winters through traveling, especially after I have a family since kids go to school..... I mean watch your local weather report tonight and check the weather in Las Vegas and the appeal will be there. Most of the Sunbelt growth comes from the Rust Belt cities, not from elsewhere in the Sunbelt. Everytime fall comes around, I just start to get very depressed as the mornings get colder and windier and the leaves fall down.

I kinda fit a weird profile See I'm educated (I'm applying to dental school, including the one at UNLV) and I have a degree from the University of Maryland but my tastes are kind of plebian, if that's the right way to put it. I'm not one of those "intellectual" types. I love eating at Red Lobter and Outback, listening to Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood, prefer Hollywood action movies over indie films and want to travel to Cancun a lot more than let's say Japan. I'm also conservative.

I'm still doing more research on the Vegas metro area vs. the city itself because the Sin City thing can be misleading. Where I live in Maryland is a county where 8th graders are taught about homosexuality and birth control. This is also a state where the governor wants to give illegal aliens in-state tuition at state universities and colleges. Personally the Strip isn't that big of a deal if I moved to the area. I live 10 miles outside DC and I never go to the memorials unless I have relatives in town. You live in CT....how often do you go into Manhattan for Broadway shows?

Terrapin,

Well said. Here I am born and raised in DC, and I never went to the Kennedy Center. I wasn't into going downtown except to see a Redskins game or more recently a Nationals game because of how crazy the Metro system is. Heck, I hated going to see a Caps game downtown unlike driving out to the Capital Centre which was a cakewalk in the 80's and early 90's. You would drive in, park and walk in to see a great hockey game.

The weather here in Vegas is great. It has stayed in the high 70's-low 80's for the last few weeks with only 5-10% humidity (which is huge compared to what we had in DC over the summer with 65-80% humidity). My aunt lives in Bandon and the weather is continuously in the 50's with 15-20+ winds so it probably gives a wind chill in the 40's. Not my cup of tea even being right on the ocean.

As I look out my window here at the new house, I see Mt. Charleston with snow on top so I could make a short drive if I wanted to get involved with snow which I hated dealing with in DC (something I won't miss). The one thing I will not miss at all is Maryland politics with all the hypocrisy especially that idiot Michael Busch.

It depends on the denomination...for instance the pay rate on dollar slots is much better than nickel slots. Generally, the higher the denomination, the better the pay rate. It also varies from casino to casino.
