Hello,
I am an RN in the state of New Jersey and looking to move to the Las Vegas area. Any RN's out there want to tell me about nursing in Nevada. On a regular Med Surg unit, what is the pay, shift differentials and patient ratio? Do you feel like your patient assignment is safe or do you feel like your license is on the line each shift???
Any insight would be appreciated.

I'm critical care, but have alot of friends in med/surg. Salary depends greatly on the hospital. Not alot of hospitals are hiring med/surg right now no matter what the hr website says. Elective surgeries are down due to the economy. Patient ratios for med/surg are anywhere from 4-5 days to 9 at night. As for your license being on the line, I've only practiced in Nevada so not sure how to answer. Alot of the travelors I've met say Nevada is high risk for your license. I would recommend you take a short term travel assignment here if you can get one before you uproot your family and move. Intro dayshift pay varies for medsurg depending on the hospital. Not sure how much experience you have but its about $25/hr new grad with 2-3$ for nights and $2 for weekends usually. Hope this helps.

If you can handle the hours and stay away from the slots and tables, you can live like a king(or Queen) in Vegas on a nurses wage + a little overtime.

Housing costs are so inexpensive that a with a gross income of 60K annually and just a low down FHA loan you will be able to afford a very nice house in a very nice part of town.

The SEIU point of view Quality Care Nevada -- (http://s103.advocateoffice.com/ - broken link)

The California Nurses Associtiation just took the St Rose Dominican System away from SEIU. I was an RN Steward for SEIU. I went to flights after 7 years in the ER's here. I'm from and trained in PA. There are currently some legislative efforts going on re staffing but as I'm no longer in a union facility I'm out of the loop on those topics. I would be hesitant to work med surg here at night. Best bet - take a travel assignment or two before moving here. Do it in different systems and then make an informed choice. If you are a new nurse - season up in NJ, NY or PA. Then make the move.
