Yeah, I'm thinking of rescinding my recommendation for Carlito's too. Some of it was good, but after the wife and I discussed it later, we decided it was pretty much the excitement of finding NM food more than the food itself that we enjoyed. I wouldn't drive all the way over there again. We make much better New Mexico food at home. Unless I can go to Albuquerque or Santa Fe for dinner, I'll stick with Garduño's for now when I eat New Mexico food out. So far, Garduño's is the best of New Mexico cuisine in Las Vegas even though it's not even close to the best in New Mexico. Too bad, we need a green chili fix now and then.

IMHO the top five U. S. cities for food are Santa Fe, New Orleans, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago, with Boston, and Clarksburg/Bridgeport receiving honorable mention. I hear Philadelphia is up there too, but I've never been.

Try El Sombrero's on Main St. Original owners are from NM( Las Vegas, NM... Sorry Vegas, you're not the 1st Las Vegas!). Food is going towards more on the Mexican side of the cuisine, but a lot of NM flare. Very popular for lunch and dinner. Good food, great atmosphere. Love this place.

You also recommended the oldest restaurant in Las Vegas, BUT it is going out of business very soon I'm sorry to say.

It nearly always comes with Sopaipillas, and either green, Hatch, New Mexico, chilis, or red Hatch chilis. If you ask for Christmas you get both red and green. Hatch green and red chilis taste uniquely different from other peppers. Red is just a fully ripened green chili, but the ripening changes the taste. Both ways they are considered the world's best tasting peppers.

Another difference is New Mexico enchiladas are not rolled, they are stacked like pancakes.

During my move I insisted we stop in ALBQ for lunch. My meal was very much like what you describe. YUM.

I will just stick to driving to Main St, and having Casa Don Juan.

I agree on Casa Don Juan. Don't get over there much anymore, but it is good Mexican food.
