Of course we have no professional sports teams or real independent comedy clubs. Historical buildings and areas are constantly being built upon or knocked down. The only thing we really got going for us is First Friday and the few other museums that we have, which unfortunately are spread out through the valley and are not all in one place, which I think would help the museums attract more patrons or visitors.
More educated people would be nice, but why would they be here? Service industry, and the support for it dictates LV. Those who thirst for knowledge seem to gravitate to areas known for this---SF, NY, Boston, etc.

I think that people that do move to Vegas may tend to be some of the folks that have decided to make a living without a college education. I must say though, last time I was there, the majority of the service staff that I had spoken with, had degrees but funny that most seemed to be from the Upper Midwest.
If Las Vegas were to become for education focused, they would have to bring in the companies, businesses, etc... where they could use that education in thier job.
Sheriff - Do you think that the lower paying service industry jobs, layoffs, immigrant employment (both legal and illegal) are some of the primary reasons for the original posting? If mom and dad both work, one makes 10 per hour (20K per year) and one makes 15 per hour (30K) per year, while you can maintain a decent household, it doesn't leave a whole lot of time to help the kids with homework and keep an eye on them 24/7.
I have the utmost respect for any hard working family, but sure seems over the past 10-20 years, this has allowed kids to change, grow up faster, put in bad situations - which ultimately leads to bad decisions. Just a thought.

I'd like to see these lists or know who is publishing them or where the study is coming from.

I don't have a lot to add, as I haven't been here long. But, we've just moved here in the fall and love it. We are a family of five with a master's degree and two bachelor's between my husband and I, for what it's worth.

Different process for different economic levels. I would never go to the DMV to register a new car. You pay a service. Everything else I do on the internet.

So those better off never go there or have one of the transactions that requires a DMV presence.

All grain of salt stuff. CQ publishes a "most dangerous state" list where they take the federal crime data manipulate it a bit and claim it tells how dangerous a state is. What it really does is point out that car theft was a problem in LV.

Others can get on it for the temperatures or being blue collar.

Than again it recently was the number one target in a list of desired relocation targets.

Some things are true. It has a high suicide rate. Always has and it is worse in the rurals than in Las Vegas. It has a very high foreclosure rate...though that is mainly driven because of the huge housing market here in 2004 to 2006.

Crime is in the middle third and getting better. The schools are reasonably good for a big school system. And the schools in the better neighborhoods are interchangable with those in similar neighborhoods elsewhere.

Taxes are some of the lowest in the nation.

Has a meth problem. Worse outside of Vegas than in it but still a problem...though teen age addiction and such is not bad.

Cost of living is reasonable and (now) housing costs are quite reasonable.

Unemployment rate is high...but better than say CA. And it won't linger as things begin to improve as it would in the rust belt.

Blue collar town. Few real aspirations to be other than a blue collar town. So it is not going to give any of the big intellectual centers a run for the money.

Personally, I don't see why it is a big deal. Just because someone doesn't have a degree doesn't mean they are not as smart as someone who does.

I do not care to live in places such as NY, Boston, or SF. Extremely, ridiculously overpriced for everything and the people are stuffy, snooty, and fake. Everyone seems to be trying to keep up with the Joneses. Yuck. JMO.

I do think that some of what Vegas has to offer had to take some smart people to create it and maintain it. Certainly the degreed professional that created the plans for the building NEEDS the ones that actually build it.

I also think that there may come a time where LV will diversify. If people continue to move here from the aforementioned places because the cost of living is ridiculous, they will also bring ideas for new businesses. Don't you think?

Sure, you can get every vice, but I want a couple of specific virtues. Can't there be at least one library or bookstore that's open 24/7?!
